I have to admit that when I first listened to this track, I didn’t like it, but my Internet was down and I couldn’t find my headphones, so my only recourse was my iPhone (3 not 4) and its hazy mini-speakers, a terrible experience for a varied mix of Casio-beat synth sounds. Finally, with rediscovered set of walkman headphones and high-speed coffee shop Internet, it all became so clear.
Chromeo’s “Don’t Turn the Lights On” is an 80s throwback with a seductive, yet grimy dance-floor familiarity. The single comes off the Montreal-sent, electrofunk duo’s third album "Business Casual," set to release in September. The sly, funky guitar licks set the mood and ensure you keep those lights down. But the distillation of funky magic synth-pop beats, a smooth baseline and the1980s-envisioned sound of spaceship computers seals the deal with that ethereal vintage feel.
The new track is no surprise coming from P-Thugg and Dave 1, but is definitely a sample of the Arab-Jewish duo’s stylistic development. Check out “I Can’t Tell You Why” and “Night by Night” and their entire second album “Fancy Footwork”, if you’re craving more.
Chromeo’s next album “Business Casual” will be available Sept. 14 in the United States.
