LIVE: The Internet at The Howard Theatre

Often times when people are listening to music they try to put in a certain genre. You cannot do that with The Internet's music. It's all over the place and finds a way to be hype and chill at the same time. With front woman Syd tha Kyd either singing or rapping and the band jamming behind her, it's a great mix that pulls you in. Their latest album "Ego Death" shows the improvement in Syd's song writing and the band's sound. Whether or not the improvement would translate to the live show remained to be seen.

First off, I stood in line for over a hour and didn't get into Howard Theatre until after 12:30am (a hour after the show was supposed to start) so this might be my last late show ever. Once inside it was all good and the opening act, St Beauty, who are part of Janelle Monae's Wonderland camp, didn't take long to come out. did a short set that warmed the eager crowd up.
After a short break, The Internet hit the stage to a cheering crowd and did a couple songs before stopping to say hello and greet the crowd. It was as if they were hating the wait just as much as the crowd was. Syd was the main attraction and held her lead role down but the keyboard player, Jameel Bruner, was hyping the the crowd up all night with his dancing. All the band members were partying and enjoying being on stage the whole night.
Old songs were moving the crowd but new jams like Girl, Go With It and Gabby got the biggest reactions. All Syd had to do was turn the mic to the crowd and they were there to fill in the words for those songs. The Internet even did a cover of Usher's "U Don't Have To Call" that rocked and turned into a crowd acappella version.
Despite that late start and some early sound problems the show was fun and worth the wait. The Internet continues to get better and they're gaining more fans because of it. Get yourself hip now and be sure to catch their show when they're in your city.
