Anjimile Holds Court at DC9 in Washington DC
Anjimile isn’t a newcomer to the music scene, but his name might be new to you. Having just released, The King album in September 2023, he’s now embarking on a club tour in support of the album.
On the tour stop at DC9 in Washington DC, Brassie –yet another name you might not know, but I have a feeling that you will soon—the acoustic guitarist filled the room with songs about awkward love triangles, dislike for social media (but still use it) and how the music industry looks at women as some sort of “currency”.
Her set was most delightful, even when she forgot the lyrics while singing a cover of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” was still fun and enjoyable.
After a brief pause to set the stage for Anjimile, the room was filled with chatter until Anjimile’s presence quelled the chatter. The setlist was comprised from the latest release, as well as from Giver Taker and their EP Reunion. Anjimile’s voice reminds me of a splash of Tracy Chapman mixed with a bit of Me’Shell N’degocello –which is alright with me. I'm not sure which was more moving, the haunting lyrics or melodies. His lyrics give a real glimpse into what it's like for a Black trans Man in America, heck a Black person in America and how there's always a pot of constant rage burning on the stove. If you can't catch them on tour, then please take listen to their music.
