LIVE: Taylor Mcferrin, Gabriel Garzón-Montano and Mizan at Red Bull Sound Select

We stepped out into the hipster hive that is currently Bushwick, Brooklyn at Lot 45 to go check out Taylor Mcferrin’s Red Bull Music Sound Select showcase. Organized by music tastemakers (and all around awesome record label Giant Step) it was a great night of up and coming R&B acts. First up was Mizan who we’ve covered in Couchsessions in the past. She hit the stage announcing it was the first time she was performing the songs live to temper crowd expectations but it was a needless warning, she was good. Accompanied by workhorse drummer Compton, the songs worked well live and she had a pretty solid stage presence.

Next was NYC live R&B stalwart Gabriel Garzón-Montano. He even effortless worked through a nice set of songs despite some technical difficulties, he brought it to trap with his drummer working the hyper speed hi-hats while Gabriel triggered samples and sung over the beat. If he ventures out of NYC he’s well worth going to go see.

The man of the hour, Taylor McFerrin came out in full hip-hop mode. He started the night off playing some beats before announcing he was building beats from scratch. Then he started beat boxing. During the night he brought guests to the stage like Emily King on stage to give his music some extra oomph, but it was clear with his demeanor and “I am just happy to be here” smile it was his night.
