LIVE: Summerstage 2013, Flatbush Zombies and The Underachievers

Despite the date on the calendar it's officially summer in New York City. Fans and air-conditioners have been placed in windows, the cops are wearing shorts, and another season of the NYC City Park Foundations Summerstage series has begun. A city wide series of mostly free concerts and shows across all five boroughs it's one of the amenities that make suffering in New York City heat worth it.

The kickoff show took place in Red Hook Park hosted by entertainingly foul mouthed Contessa from party throwing clique CuntMafia. First up was super local (Red Hook stand-up!) hero Kris Kasanova. Shouting out his family to the crowd, he came out to a warm reception and played a short and energetic set, the highlight being his ominous sounding song, 'Mosh Pit"

Next up was one of the big crowd favs, The Underachievers. A part of the current East Coast revival wave they came out to chants of the movement’s current mantra, "Beast Coast". The mostly teenage crowd moshed along to their various underground stoner hits. They dedicated their track, 'Gold Soul Theory' to recently deceased MC Capital Steez.

Finally Flatbush Zombies came out to thunderous applause (and hectic crowd shoving matches. They were fresh from a 24 hour flight from Australia but you couldn't tell by the energy they gave back to the crowd. All three members bounced across the stage and traded verses in a much sharper and professional fashion then when I saw them a year ago...they expertly worked the stage and the crowd appreciated every moment.
