"Who woulda thunk?" That's the opening line in Nas: Time Is Illmatic; an independent film about the making of Nas' legendary first album. Time Is Illmatic is not just a track by track breakdown of the album but a full background on Nas' childhood and what created the mindset for the lyrics that made the album. With great commentary from professors, producers, Nas' family and Nas himself, the film gives great insight into one of hip hop's classic albums.
While the film is all about Nas the star is arguably Nas' brother jungle who was there every step of the way and also present for the screening of the film. His point of view and commentary on the people they grew up with really gave perspective of how unlikely this would happen. Hearing and seeing what went into the creation of the album set up a performance by Nas perfectly. After hearing pieces of songs and seeing videos of performances then whole crowd was ready to get the live version.
Right after the 70 minute film ended, the curtain rose and the show was on. Nas came out to a cheering crowd and went right into N.Y. State of Mind. The lyrics never hit harder and despite it being the second show of the night the energy was high. Nas worked the stage and interacted with the crowd well, he even signed a vinyl cover for a fan mid set. Anytime Nas turned the mic to the crowd they were more than ready to do their part.
Nas really seemed to be enjoying himself but not as much as his brother, Jungle, who danced and acted out the lyrics in the background. Nas took time to intro each song and shoutout fans in the audience. One of which was a young man on his dad's shoulders and sporting Nas' signature curved part in his haircut. The diversity of the colors, age group and sexes in the crowd was amazing; good music speaks to everyone.
After going through Illmatic, Nas performed Hate Me Now, Made You Look and closed with One Mic. They all rang off and the crowd didn't want it to end despite the late hour. Good film and performance, both of which I want to see again.
Nas: Time Is Illmatic is showing in select theaters, iTunes and on On Demand. Check out timeisillmatic.com for more information and if Nas is in your city go pay your respects.
