Duran Duran and Chic with Nile Rodgers at the Verizon Center (DC)

With the influx of 80's bands hitting the road, its always great when your personal favorites announce that they are touring again. So, when we heard that Duran Duran was on the road again AND bringing Chic with the Legendary Nile Rodgers we had to be there.
After arriving early to the arena, only to find out that newcomer Shamir was opening was a delight. The singer with the crazy countertenor voice started the pregame party off with a few songs.

By now the arena is starting to fill in nicely, some with anticipation of seeing a band from their teenage years, some who want to catch a glimpse of their favorite Duran Duran member; most who just want to have a good time and dance the night way.
Which is exactly what happened when Chic took the stage. For the next 45 minutes, we were transported to Studio 54.  Chic's frontman Nile Rodgers, who has collaborated/written songs for everyone from Grace Jones, Teddy Pendergrass, INXS, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Daft Punk and a host of others, jumped right into their hits, pure disco bangers "I Want Your Love" and "Everybody Dance",  before performing a medley of songs that Rodgers wrote or produced for other artists, like Daft Punk's "Get Lucky", "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge, "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross and "Let's Dance" by David Bowie (many people in the audience were shocked to find out Rodgers had a hand in that song.  Closing the set with the feel good song "Good Times" Chic was joined on stage with about 25 people from the crowd and by former Chic member and DC native Sylver Logan Sharp.

With the energy level on high, Duran Duran took the energy even higher.  Opening the set with "Paper Gods" from their latest release, the 19-song set only included a few songs from their latest release.  DD seemed to focus on the hits from albums past, like "The Wild Boys", "Girls on Film", and "View to A Kill". I'm shocked that they chose to include their cover of Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel's "White Lines" from 1995's Thank You album, instead of "The Reflex", which wasn't included. But the audience enjoyed "White Lines" all the same.

A couple of highlights, happened when DD brought out longtime collaborator Nile Rodgers to play on "Notorious" and "Pressure Off", both songs were produced by Rodgers. And, when they infused a portion of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" into 'Planet Earth".
The Durans are still currently on tour, I strongly suggest that if they come to a city near you, go! You'll have a guaranteed good time.
