LIVE: #GetGifted with Big Boi at The Studio At Webster Hall

Considering the type of performer that Big Boi is, it was no surprise the early call and rainy weather were no deterrent to the feverish collective packed in The Studio at Webster Hall. And he did not disappoint. In an energetic 45 minute set, Andre Patton once again displayed why he is one of the best in the business. Weaving through Outkast classics and selections from his new release ‘Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors‘, the crowd was at his command.

Warming up for a round of performances in anticipation of Tuesday’s release, Big Boi got his footing with classics like ‘The Art of Storytelling’ and ‘Rosa Parks‘. The live band fueled his energy and his greeting showed his mood. Honestly saying “I know y’all already got the bootleg,” he showed off why there was much more to hear. He immediately followed with ‘Apple of My Eye’, one of VLADR’s more spirited cuts. From there, he just seemed to rev up. Mastering the stage with his signature confidence, Big Boi put on an “afternoon turnup” going through hits like ‘B.O.B.‘ and ‘I Like The Way You Move‘. The audience were able background singers and kept him moving.

Upset that his time was cut short, he still managed to sneak in the first single from VLADR, ‘Momma Said‘. Again, we had a glimpse of why Big Boi is one of the best to ever do it. And why it’s always a treat to catch his controlled kinetics in person. From what he gave off this afternoon, we’re sure to be treated to his performances for some time to come. He gives everything in each performance and you can tell he’s grateful for the chance to do it. His fun becomes ours and it reciprocates. Big Boi just knows how to throw a party. Even on a dreary afternoon in the East Village.
