LIVE: Alice Russell at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge

Couchsessions recently got a chance to check out Alice Russell at Le Poisson Rouge. The thing about soul music is that while it definitely conveys emotion on wax (I still get misty eyed over Mary’s “My Life” album), experiencing it live is a whole other animal. It’s what’s great about seeing Alice Russell; she’s got a standout voice and is definitely cut from a unique cloth as an artist, but the emotion she brings out on stage and in the audience is an old one. Her voice was pitch perfect, her band was tight, and the crowd was eager. Working through favorites, the crowd sung along (and noticing this, Alice had no problem leaning the microphone to them and sharing the stage). It helped show that when you’ve got a great soul singer on stage and eager crowd its less performance and more of communion. She’s a must see.

For those unlucky ones that won't get a chance to see her anytime soon (tourdates here) check out her cover of one of our favorite songs in recent memory, Connan Mockasin's "I Am The Man That Will Find You".
