ART: Richmond, VA: Art Whino's Richmond Mural Project

Art Whino, the DMV based gallery, brings a second installment of their Richmond Mural Project to the city that bares the title's name. For two weeks 12 artists will cover 20 walls throughout  the city. We met the good folks from Art Whino last year during New York Comic Con in their stellar exhibit of work by several artists, some created live during the convention, by Angry Woebots, kaNO, Adrian Viajero Roman, and others. Their mission for the Richmond Mural Project is to create over 100 murals by world renown talent in the first 5 years of the project. Art Whino says of their event,"The recurrence and solidification of the project throughout this time will establish Richmond as a landmark destination for internationally recognized murals and will create exposure for the city, establishing it as a premier art destination." Starting July 22nd, artists will continue to do just that.

Artists included this year are Angry Woebots, Aniekan, Andrew Hem, Bezt - Etam Crew, Ever - Nicolás Romero, Gaia, Greg Mike, Kelly Towles, Natalia Rak, Sainer - Etam Crew, Sonni, and Stormiemills.

Emerging areas like Wynwood, Miami are a testament to the power art has to draw visitors. After seeing Juxtapoz's coverage of the Hecho en Oaxaca exhibit and mural project, I've developed a sudden urge to visit the southern Mexican town of Qaxaca, which I never previously had, nor was I aware of the already rich street art culture there. And judging by their Instagram feed comments, I was not alone in those sentiments. Once developed past this first stage, the Richmond Mural Project will surely have a similar effect on tourism and art peepers in general (although I have been to Richmond a few times already, lovely city). We'll be paying attention to this developing community. As soon as Scope shows up, we'll know you're on your way Richmond.
