REVIEW: Breakbot - By Your Side

It’s been a long time coming…

When Thibaut Berland aka Breakbot started making remixes for Justice and Digitalism most believed his success was more of a “right place at the right time” sort of phenomenon. It was thought that his hype would go only as far as the hype of his predecessors could take him. At the time, Four-to-the-floor “nu-rave” French house was at the top of its game with no sign of slowing down so Breakbot singles and edits were seen all over. As the hysteria for French house died down so did the releases of Breakbot. But with the release of his first full length album 'By your side', Breakbot has officially branched out on his own. In a time where electro-pop is struggling to find an identity, Berland has crafted a fine array of funky electro-pop that has brought him back to the forefront of the French dance-scene.

Breakbot is a master of multiple instruments and his new album really emphasizes this range. Crammed in tight with soulful, disco, piano-led emotive ballads that are equally accented by brass and bass, this 14 track compilation of feel-good pop songs is cheery and warm. Featuring sunny and bright melodies 'By your side' brings the summer vibes to a fall release that should keep your spirits high as the temperature drops. Berland cites Michael Jackson as one of his biggest inspirations and like the Thriller album, By Your Side is most highly appreciated in its entirety (of course it is not nearly of the same quality as MJ’s). This album is a unique homage to 70s and 80s funk with a modern blend of electro instrumentals and sensational vocals. It is a joy to listen to.
