Most people were sorta shocked when I included the Black Keys in my Top 40 Albums of 2008 post. I don't know why. The Keys' last album, which was produced by Danger Mouse as a precursor to a never realied collaboration with Ike Turner, was a banger and still gets spins to this day.
Apparently me and Jim Jones have the same musical tastes, because Jones announced this week that him and the Keys will drop a new album entitled Blakroc (double meaning implied), which will include collaborations with RZA, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Raekwon, Pharoahe Monch, Ludacris and more. I'm not surprised at this move, since most of the Key's work is rock ready. However, I get nervous when these rap/rock projects are announced, because they sound better in theory than execution.
The first track from the Blacroc collab defies the trend, however. Mos Def's bluesy hooks already complement the Ohio backwoods sound of the Keys, while Jim Jones rhymes miraculously seem comparable as well.
As a fan of the Keys and everyone involved, I'm expecting good things from this project. Stay tuned.
