Southerngold - Santigold vs Southern Hip-Hop (mixed by Terry Urban)
Even though these mixtape mashups are a dime a dozen these days, I'm still a sucker for them, especially when they are blended as well as Terry Urban's Southerngold Mixtape.
Southerngold mixes Southern hip-hop with the hipster queen Santi effortlessly. Tracks like sound like they were mixed in the studio rather than on a mixtape.
Unfortunately Southerngold almost didn't see the light of day. Santi's label Downtown Recordings dropped a cease and desist letter on Terry Urban shelving the project.
I gotta agree with Terry Urban droping this mixtape opens up a whole NEW audience for Santigold. His thoughts on the mixtape sum up exactly what Downtown's short sightedness is doing:

I’m not selling this… I’m not making a dime… I’m encouraging everyone to BUY Santigold’s album… and I’m helping to expand her fan base to new markets… in addition, none of these songs are as they would appear on her actual album… EVERYTHING is remixed and redone… so there is no competition with her actual in-stores album (which is dope…go buy it… two copies!)
Is Downtown Records not aware of the influence deejay culture has made on Santi’s career? All the deejays who have made homemade remixes and re-edits that have gotten play in clubs across the world? It’s not like commercial radio was embracing her music when she dropped. It was the progressive deejay, the same deejays who make remixes and mashups and support avant-garde creative music!

Downtown should be tripping over themselves to get this on your hard drive. (via Different Kitchen)
