MUSIC: Political Hip-Hop Isn't Dead! FIGHT MUSIC Docu-Mix
Depending on your politics or racial background, "Independence Day" can be a questionable holiday. Stirring the pot, LA based DJ/Producer, d.painter, has released what he calls a "docu-mix" of new and classic political Hip-Hop titled Fight Music: Pedagogy Of The Oppressed. The project is a variation on his set for the annual Politicon convention which happend June 25th in Los Angeles. He was tasked with representing the "black perspective" for one of the Fusicology hosted DJ showcases which also tackled women's issues and world politics. Themes from cultural appropriation (Kendrick Lamar "Blacker The Berry"), police brutality (Vince Staples "Hands Up", Anderson .Paak "Animals"), and the 2016 election (YG & Nipsey Hussle "Fuck Donald Trump") are interspersed with sound bites from Killer Mike, KRS-One and Tupac breaking down political and social theories that reinforce the many subjects tackled.
D.painter was formerly DJ Tru in Washington DC, talk show host on WPFW 89.3 FM (Pacifica Radio) and Executive Director of the Hip-Hop nonprofit, The Midnight Forum Inc. Although his personal Mixcloud and Soundcloud are loaded with all types of House Music, politics and that old Boom Bap are nothing new to him. The title borrows from the 1960's book by Paulo Freire in which he discusses the philosophy of educating colonized people. A theme is the idea of "praxis", informed action, something d.painter says Hip-Hop exemplifies both through music and the activist movements created by the Hip-Hop Generation. In a Trap fueled year, Fight Music proves the genre can still make profound statements for change.
