On new track “Victory”, Pro Era’s Joey Bada$$ delivers Jock Jams for a new generation.
The Good: A pretty solid track, sporting verses overflowing with hoops metaphors. The production by Kirk Knight (A$AP Ferg) and 1-900 (Hoodboi) is catchy, tastefully spare, and doesn’t try to do too much. The "two-three when I get in my zone" line that checks both His Airness and Jim Boeheim's trademark defense.
The Bad(a$$): The track is a one-off, created for Mountain Dew + the NBA’s Courtside Project and released just before the All Star Weekend in a triumph of craven corporate cross-branding. History is rarely kind to verses that start out with “First things first, uh, shoutout to the sponsors.”
The Ugly: The “We ain't taking no losses/we the winning team, East” line rings a little hollow, since the East lost to the West this year.
The new album A.B.B.A. from Joey Bada$$ is expected in the first half of 2017. Preview the album track "Land of the Free" on Soundcloud.
