MUSIC: Deerhunter - Snakeskin

For the amount of quality albums that Deerhunter has pumped out over the years it still surprises me how under the radar they actually are. They’ve shifted from modern punk, to avant-garde shoe-gaze, to 60’s psychedelia, to 70’s lower east side influenced rock and have never put anything out that’s less than great. It’s because no matter how weird or out there they get their knack for writing simple beautiful melodies never disappears under whatever musical experimentation they may have going on at the time. They are set to release their newest record, Fading Frontier, later in the year and hopefully this is the one to bring them the bigger audience they deserve. Their first video from the album, “Snakeskin”, has a track that still has the band sounding like 70’s rock with a clearer funk element. According to them the 80’s synth rock band INXS was a big influence this time around and you can hear some of that with in some of the weird synths that creep up towards the end of the song.
