The duo of Bob Moses hail from the Great White North (Vancouver, to be exact), but you shouldn’t expect Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance to break out the acoustic guitars and fiddles for a folkie rave-up. Rather, the twosome traffic in moody, dance-inflected electro-pop that’s more the province of New York City.
Their clever and seamless interweaving of house and trance music influences with more traditional guitar-based pop set the music of Howie (vocals/guitar) and Vallance (keyboards) apart from the crowd. Serving as Bob Moses' biggest single from 2015 album Days Gone By, “Tearing Me Up” borrows the chordal progression and the gauzy, soft-focus feel of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” but introduces a hypnotic bass groove to it.
Once locked into a proper vibe, the two are smart enough to stay there—the full album version of “Tearing Me Up” runs to almost 8 minutes yet manages to feel like half that. Also worth a listen: A-Track’s house + horns remix of the track.
Bob Moses is hitting the 9:30 Club in DC on Thursday, September 29. Tickets are available through Ticketfly.
