MUSIC: Beirut - No No No

Beirut's an established band who's love of gypsy leaning world music made them really popular for a time in indie rock circles but they never broke out into worldwide stardom like other bands using world music influence like Vampire Weekend. The reason is while other bands kind of throw their influences in a mélange along with regular indie rock tropes (punk, disco, etc), Beirut seemed to try to go even deeper into their influences. They left their adorably ramshackle and lo-fi electronic assisted debut and re-recorded some of those early songs with a full band in order to give them more heft and stay truer to the roots. Its stuff you can actually imagine an old man humming to himself in a small village somewhere, and after a hiatus they are back and picking up right where they left off. Listen below
