MUSIC: Avalanches - Frankie Sinatra

The Avalanches are a throwback to an era where samples weren’t prohibitively expensive. Early on in hip-hop you would have expansive albums crammed fill with samples that build on each other, from De La Soul to DJ Shadow. That came crashing to a halt once we entered into the 00’s where expensive licensing fees pretty much relegated samples to those who can afford it (Kanye West) or those below the radar enough where they won’t get sued.
The Avalanches debut classic, Since I Left You, was a one of the last gasps of this golden era of sampling and only a mere 16 years later they’ve finally decided to follow it up with a new record, Wildflower. Their newest track, “Frankie Sinatra” shows not much has changed; the track is built off playful samples that have Danny Brown and MF DOOM trading verses.
