RECIPE: Show Your Love With Heart Shaped Oreo Surprise Cookies

Valentine's Day is a holiday that creates a lot of mixed emotions. Some people are excited to celebrate with their significant other, and some are ready and waiting to harpoon every Cupid in sight. Personally, no matter what my relationship status is at the time, I'm just downright excited for the chocolate.

The sweet (pun intended) part about Valentine's Day is the opportunity to show some chocolatey love to ANYONE. Parents, co-workers, your neighbor who needs to be buttered up after last weekend's loud party...the options are endless when you really think about it.

So now that you have a reason to bake something, what are you going to bake? I'll tell you what: chocolate chip cookie-covered Oreos. Not only does this recipe take two already amazing cookies to the next level, but you can even make them heart-shaped to give the recipient that extra lovey V-Day feeling. What's even better is this recipe is very easy--even for those who get a little nervous when it comes to using their kitchen for activities aside from eating.

Start off by either a) purchasing ready-to-bake cookie dough or b) make it from scratch!

I opted to make the dough from scratch (and you can find that recipe here or on the back of any bag of Nestle chocolate chips). If you choose to do this, I would recommend putting the dough in the refrigerator for about an hour before the next step so that it is more firm. Then follow these super easy steps below!

bt1

1) Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees.

2) Take a heaping spoonful of cookie dough and flatten it out in your palm.

3) Place an Oreo in the center and begin folding the cookie dough around the Oreo. Manipulate it so that all Oreo edges are covered by cookie dough.

4) *Optional* Shape the cookie dough into a heart. I added a little extra cookie dough to the points of the heart in order to give it a good shape without exposing the Oreo. To really amp up the Valentine's Day theme, add some red sprinkles or anything that gets you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

bt4

5) Place on a greased cookie sheet and put them in the pre-heated oven.

6) About 9 minutes in, check on them to make sure the top is cooking as evenly as the bottom. Since these are thick cookies, at the 9 minute mark I moved them up to the top rack and turned the broiler on to bake them evenly for about one minute. That comes to about 10 minutes of baking time. Use your judgement! Or, ask someone who has some.

7) Indulge! Or, wrap them up in pretty cellophane and make it an extra special gift for your loved one. I would recommend packaging them immediately as you may be unable to resist consuming all of them before Friday. Come on, you know you'll justify it.

Happy Valentine's Day!
