I've been on a serious sushi kick this summer, and in particular, the last couple of weeks. When it's so hot out, the last thing I want is a hot meal and sushi just always seems to hit the spot.
Takahachi on Avenue A between 5th and 6th is a super local spot for me and one that always seems to be busy. I went on a Monday night and since there were only two of us, we didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes. But people were coming in and leaving, not wanting to wait at all.
The dining room is not large but it's not too small either. There are also seats around where the sushi is actually being made, so there are quite a few seats all together. The ambiance is busy and efficient. No one seemed to be lingering there for too long, almost like a get in and get out situation. Granted, it takes me about two minutes to eat sushi so I can absolutely see why. It's just devoured.
We started with the bacon wrapped scallops to start, barbecue sauce on the side. These were incredible, although also very tiny. Needless to say these disappeared in about a minute. Next, we shared a spicy tuna roll and a rainbow roll. I actually wasn't a huge fan of the spicy tuna roll -- it was too spicy for me and also very small. Usually these rolls have a little more substance to them, but this one was super small. The rainbow roll on the other hand, was so good that we ended up ordering another. Typically the specialty rolls are quite large and we each needed our own of these. I think there were only six pieces as opposed to eight here. But they were so, so good.
Because it was Monday and I wasn't in a drinking mood, we left the beverages out this time. It's amazing how affordable eating out can be if you don't drink! All in all, Takahachi is a great place and I'm looking forward to my next meal there. But I think the amount of food is on average less than normal, making it a little on the pricier end if you look at it that way.
