FOOD: Philly’s Federal Donuts

A recent trip to Philly led directly to Zahav, one of the city’s hottest restaurants headed by James Beard award-winning chef Michael Solomonov.  While my taste buds were dancing like the Phillie Phanatic at Citizen’s Bank Park after my experience at the Bourdain-certified establishment, I skipped dessert because I was saving room for some golden fried carb loading at his other spot, Federal Donuts.  A month or so ago, I wrote about the District’s GBD and have on more than one occasion experienced a foodgasm or two annihilating the Korean-style sriracha and garlic wings at Astro Doughnuts & Fried ChickenAs a slave to the culture, I had to visit the place that started the latest trend in hot oil immersed pastry and poultry.

By the time I composed myself and made it to the Sansom Street location, they had sold out of chicken and most of the donuts.  Apparently, I am the only one who sleeps in after a late night of cocktail consumption in the city of Brotherly Love. While I am addicted to donuts (DISCLAIMER: I prefer yeast over cake),  I'm not a fan of the fruity-flavored cake donuts although they look so good. On my next visit home, I may have to skip that last drink at Hop Sing Laundromat and grab a baker’s dozen.
