FOOD: Ode to Highland Kitchen [Boston -- Somerville]
High up on a hill on Highland Ave in Somerville sits Highland Kitchen, a restaurant and bar that serves up the American comfort food and kick-butt cocktails you're almost always craving. Each year, local magazine Scout Somerville accepts nominees and votes for their Scouts Honored awards. This year, Highland Kitchen has the potential to sweep the board, nominated in multiple categories (Best Bartender and Best Brunch, among others). They're clearly very popular, if the line out the door every weekend wasn't a clue.
The menu cult favorite is the Buffalo Fried Brussels Sprouts appetizer, but I'm also a huge fan of the Ricotta and Mozarella Fritters. Just order both. The truth is, it's hard to go wrong with cuisine that's crafted to satisfy your very gut cravings. The atmosphere is dim, yet lively (Sunday brunch has live bluegrass music), and the servers, in my experience, are consistently helpful. My personal dinner recommendation is the Ratatouille, with a polenta crisped to perfection, and for brunch I'd say the Fried Catfish and Grits.
The menu is largely savory, inventive variations on typical southern American eats. Dessert delivers with a Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae you probably won't want to share. Not only is the food delicious, but the bar menu makes the inevitable wait for a table actually enjoyable. Ask for a Mark 'N' Stormy or choose from the many beers and wines.
