New Belgium Brewery recently released its all-day sessional indian pale ale, Slow Ride IPA. This past Sunday, New Belgium DC partnered with Mason Dixie Biscuit Company, Gordy’s Pickle Jar, and Derek Thomas to provide a hands-on educational experience in pickling, braising, brewing, and ceramics at Mess Hall DC.

New Belgium Brewery’s representatives taught participants about the fine art of melding water, hops, malt, yeast, and sugar to create the elixir of the gods, beer. Slow food scholars were also educated on the proper way to taste a beer following the ASTM method: appearance, smell, taste, and mouthfeel.

Chef Mo from Mason Dixie Biscuit Company gave an instructional course on the low and slow method of braising meats. Guests overindulged in his heavenly creation stuffed inside of those scrumptiously fluffy biscuits we’ve come to expect from Mason Dixie Biscuit Company. The most interactive of the stations was the art of pickling.

Gordy’s Pickle Company instructed patrons on the art of combining water, vinegar, and spices to create tangy vegetables to be the perfect accompaniment to a meal or enjoyed on their own.

After cultivating , everyone headed over to Brookland Pint for the after party. Drinks specials included the Slow Ride IPA as well as other New Belgium Brewery beers including my favorite the Cocoa Mole, a porter with notes of chocolate and chili pepper. With spring approaching, I’m looking forward to sitting on a rooftop somewhere and diving into this well-balanced beer boasting 8 different hops and a 4.5 ABV.
