FOOD: DCity Smokehouse [DC]

Over the weekend, I was craving some authentic barbecue.  We could spend hours arguing about whether Memphis, Kansas City, Texas, or Carolina style barbecue is the best.  For me, I love a great dry rub over sauced up meat any day and DCity Smokehouse did not disappoint.

The smell coming from this place would satisfy the soul of the insatiable. Even still, I selected up a few items and salivated like Pavlov’s dog until my order was ready.  The BBQ pinto beans, spicy collards, and potato salad were just okay.  The pork ribs and rib tips were cooked just right as noted by the illustrious smoke ring but I wish the dry rub was a tad bit more present against the smoked flavor.  Hailing from Philadelphia, a proper sandwich is considered the food of gods and the true superstar at DCity Smokehouse is the Meaty Palmer.  Juicy turkey and pork belly smoked to perfection on crisped Texas Toast submerged in avocado, tomatoes, chipotle aioli, and cilantro ranch made me forget that Ben’s half smoked is the staple food item in the District.  And the crispy brussel sprouts were the perfect accompaniment. This slice of perfection between two pieces of buttery bread should be is a rites of passage that all Washingtonians should experience at least once in their life.  The wings were stellar too and had a spicy yet sweet dry rub.

DCity Smokehouse is located on Florida Avenue and has bar stools but I’d grab it to go and turn it into a picnic or enjoy it at home.
