FOOD: Breakfast at The Table [Boston--Cambridge]
For a brunch experience that's both comfortable and a culinary explosion, head to The Table at Season to Taste in Cambridge. As an extension of the locally-focused catering company, The Table can normally only be reserved for private dinner parties of 10-20. As of this month, the seasonally-savvy chef wizards have opened their doors to Sunday brunchers for a prix fixe, three-course weekly-changing menu of sensational and savory dishes (for just $19!) Booze has yet to be added, but you'll hardly miss it what with the plethora of upgraded brunch classics, like bananas foster pancakes with walnut Nutella.
Tucked away on Mass Ave, The Table is, well, a table-- more accurately, two farmhouse tables that seat guests family-style in a long, light and airy room. The tables face the kitchen so you can watch and interact with the chefs as they cook up your meal. Cloth napkins and mason jars make the whole experience feel homey, like breakfast at a friend's, if that friend happened to be a culinary genius. The week I dined there, I started my meal with a melt-in-your-mouth squash soup and finished it with a fragrant orange basil sorbet.
In between, I managed the mammoth seen above: "Ze Brunch Berger." That's a burger, with a fried egg (yolk still runny), and bacon, and cheddar cheese, and Siracha aioli, and avocado on a toasted English muffin. Once I was able to get a grip on the thing, I was plunged into a heavenly and hearty taste experience. Probably the best part about brunch at The Table is the sense that the chefs there are having fun. What with the commitment to a changing menu, the playful use of in-season ingredients, the communal tables-- brunch felt akin to enjoying a good film with friends instead of your everyday restaurant outing. I couldn't help but appreciate each bite and was amazed at the level of craft that went into my breakfast. Add to that excellent service and "endless coffee," and I'll see you next Sunday and the Sunday after.
