EVENT PREVIEW: Union BBQ [DC] -- 6/14
What are you doing June 14th? No, wait, don’t answer that: I’ve made your plans for you.
From the folks behind U Street Music Hall comes next Saturday’s Union BBQ. Running from noon to midnight at Northeast foodie haven Union Market, the Jamie XX-headlined electronic music festival (read: more DJs than you can shake a stick at) promises to be a proper open to the summer season.
But you guys, the food: As has been reported, Toki Underground chef/owner and Couch Sessions contributor Erik Bruner-Yang is bringing back the pho dog, that classic ballgame food updated and completely swagged out with a sausage bathed in pho broth, served on a toasted bun and topped with a spicy slaw and hoisin sauce, and which hasn’t been served in two years, when U Street Music Hall discontinued their food menu. Also worth a mention are Mama Nada’s Empanadas, made and served at every Moombahton Massive party by DJ Dave Nada’s mom. They’re delicious, trust me.
BBQ-goers will also be able to try juices from Riddim, a juice and tea bar from the owners of U Street Music Hall neighboring restaurant The Greek Spot. Rounding out the offerings are barbecue from DCity Smokehouse, sausages from 13th Street Meats, Jewish deli eats from DGS Delicatessen, cray-cray burittos from Rito Loco, pub food from The Brixton, tacos from El Rey, and sweets from Dolcezza, the gelateria that opened up a new production facility and cafe a stone’s throw from Union Market. I'm telling you: it's gonna be epic.
And, for all you veg-heads out there, vegan and vegetarian options will be available. I’ll see you there, tofu pho dog in hand.
