MUSIC: Adrian Younge – Sittin' By The Radio
You may know Adrian Younge best from his cinematic production on Ghostface Killah’s Twelve Reasons to Die and its sequel. With retro instrumentation strokes, Younge painted the moody backgrounds for Ghostface’s gory Italian horror film concepts.
Younge’s latest album, Something About April II, releases in late January, and judging by lead track “Sittin By The Radio,” it'll be a soulful, engrossing listen. The funky bassline and lush orchestration recall Al Bell’s production of Isaac Hayes, but the harpsichord intro and sitar-inspired guitar lines hearken back to the twangy, visceral scores of composer Ennio Morricone—a heavy influence on Younge that he's hardly made a secret of. Like the perfect establishing shot in a film, this brief track sets up an album’s worth of action to come.
