COUCHxJAPAN: Tokyo, Set 1
by Neil Maclean (website | @sixfive)
Everyone talks about Tokyo being a sensory overload, and it may be, but at the same time things are very orderly. Even packed into a train or in a crowd you don’t feel the claustrophobic feeling you might in other cities. People here have learned how to fit into small spaces and leave you a little privacy in yours. There’s also an emphasis on politeness that makes the sheer size of the city easy to deal with. An old shop owner walked me 6 blocks to an ATM when I couldn’t understand his description of the route.
