Her spirit is strong. Her stance is clear. Bringing awareness about her country is her primary agenda. Nneka, the Nigerian beauty with a captivating presence and an even more powerful message, takes hold of her listeners and rattles the tail feathers of the weak. She holds no prisoners. Wrapped in this tiny package is a person of hope, strength, endurance, perseverance, history, and pride. She makes it her business to stand up for her people, and makes sure you never forget her.

Couch Sessions had an opportunity to sit with this awesome woman to discuss her music, her life, and her future during a stop on her acoustic tour in New York City. Just based on her open personality and magnetizing aura, Nneka will be around for a very long while.

Both J Period and Nneka have been on my radar for a hot minute now, and I’m glad to see that Period is working with the emerging artists on a collaboration called The Madness (Onye-Ala). The project drops soon and will include collaborations by M-1 (Dead Prez), Jay Electronica, Zumbi (Zion I), Rakaa (Dilated Peoples), Aceyalone (Freestyle Fellowship), General Steele (Boot Camp Clik) & Talib Kweli. Check it.

Nneka - The Uncomfortable Truth

Before The Roots took the stage last Tuesday at New York’s Higline Ballroom (and after some atrocious neo-soul singer I can’t remember the name of), a Nigerian singer came on stage and stole the show. The singer, Nneka, has been gaining buzz in the neo-soul communities for a while, and has already garnered a MOBO award in the UK. She more than held her own dropping her tracks “The Uncomfortable Truth,” and getting an extended ovation with her track “Suffri”. The response for the crowd was so great that she she extended her 3 song time limit and should’ve gone on more in my opinion.

Even though she is Nigerian, her music is steeped in everything from hip-hop, to R&B, to reggae. Her five song EP is simply stellar and is worth a purchace on Amazon and she is also going to be at Jammin Java with See-I this Saturday if you’re in the DMV area.
