We have been following beatmaker, trumpeter, and R&B crooner Miles Bonny it seems since the site started in 2005.  The Kansas CIty-based aritst has been making some of the best smoothed out soul on the planet and New York will finally get a taste of his Lumberjack Soul during the Brooklyn Bodega #WeGotTheJazz showcase at Drom this Tuesday night. We’ve been fans of Kansas City’s Miles Bonny ever since he put out that SoundsGood project back in the day. The singer, rapper, producer, trumpeter and DJ is still making some of the best R&B you probably never heard about. Until now. Lumberjack Soul is the latest installment in his soul journey. With influences ranging from The Meters to Raphael Saadiq to J Dilla and even Kermit the Frog, Lumberjack Soul is able to be forward thinking yet retain that classic soul vibe. Check it.

It’s just solid. Day is a great engineer and composer. Saadiq is the man. A professional. I went to see him KC recently. That man has stars and truth in his eyes. much respect and thanks. Plus this version of “What’s life like” gets my soul stirring.

Ab & Daru – “A.W.I.P”

My peoples. INnatesounds Crew! Daru is the dood and Ab is talented with a great ear. They both do themselves well… and Im so happy this album came out. It’s sold well for being something very few people know about. It deserves it. It is musical gold. check it out yo.

It’s been a hot minute since we checked up on Midwest crooner and Innate Sounds Crew member Miles Bonny, but I’m glad to report that he’s dropping a new album, titled Scorpio Inn. Scorpio brings back the smooth vibes that we know Miles from on his earlier projects, but in this world of over autotunification and neo-soul hateration, I’m glad to see an old school crooner get some shine.

Us East Coast people may joke about the so-called “flyover states,” but the nation’s heartland has went ahead and produced a unique scene all its own. And if everybody that comes from the Show Me State sounds like Miles Bonny, then we better take notice.

The first time I heard about Bonny was when he was with Sounds Good, his collaboration he put out with MC Joe Good, which we played on the Podcast back in the day. Bonny provided the beats to the album Biscuits & Gravy which is one of the more underrated hip-hop releases of 2005, and offered a glimpse of the Lawrence, KS hip-hop scene which birthed the equally underrated Deep Thinkers. I lost track of Bonny until a week ago, when I heard some of his new tracks that put him in front of the mic. Bonny, was known more for his production skills, dropping almost 15 albums on his own Innatesounds label, but he left the vocals to other artists.

Bonny has put his vocals at the forefront, and the dude’s sound is incredible. Bonnny’s smoky voice sets this dude apart from a lot of R&B singers out today. Personally, this might actually hold me over until D’Angelo decides to put out another album. Bonny is also as jazz trumpeter, and his work blends hip-hop, jazz, and soul.
