This June at Freedom Plaza, classic martial arts films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix will be boldly reimagined with an original hip hop score.
D.C. visionaries SHAOLIN JAZZ (featured in NPR and The Washington Post), in partnership with the DowntownDC BID, are putting a unique spin on outdoor film screenings with CAN I KICK IT? Every Tuesday in June, District residents will get to experience their most-beloved martial arts movies in an entirely new way, as prolific D.C. DJ 2-Tone Jones will create an original hip hop score for each film live in real time.
“There’s a special synergy that exists between hip hop and martial arts that is rarely explored in depth,” said SHAOLIN JAZZ co-founder Gerald Watson. “Our goal with CAN I KICK IT? is to create an experience where one can almost tangibly explore those parallels and synergies.”
Before each film screening, guests can grab specialty-themed cocktails at CAN I KICK IT?’s happy hour at Boss Shepherd’s Restaurant and play free ping pong on Freedom Plaza. A limited number of stadium cushions will be provided by Zipcar along with free popcorn courtesy of Pret A Manger (while supplies last).
CAN I KICK IT? is a free, all-ages event.
