DJ Eurok (pronounced “you rock”) has been a fixture in the DJ hip-hop scene for the past 5 years. He has been a resident at such capital area venues as Local 16, Wonderland Ballroom, and The Reef, spinning a mixture of underground hip-hop, soul, funk, and latin grooves. In addition, Eurok is the backing DJ for DC hip-hop icon Head-Roc.

In addition to DJing, Eurok is also a artist and producer. Eurok's first solo project was 2003's Self Realization, a electronica/down-tempo project which is avaliable at CDBaby.com. He also has production credits on Head-Roc's The Return of Black Broadway and Negrophobia albums as well.

In 2004, he was selected to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome where he collabrated with underground acts like DJ Short E and singer Michelle Amador. Currently, he spins on Friday nights at Asylum in Adams Morgan and Saturday nights at Local 16.

The Couch Sessions Podcast 003: Kierstin Gray

kgray.jpgNew York singer-songwriter Kierstin Gray says that she's “the best music you've never heard.”

And you know what? She's right.

The Acoustic soul storyteller is ready to take the world by storm in 2005. Many would compare her sound to Jill Scott or Tracey Chapman, however, Gray's simple melodies and poigniant lyrics allow her to create a sound that is distictly her own.

Kierstin grew up in suburban New Jersey, but she now calls New York City her home. In NYC, Kierstin has managed to win over fans and critics alike as well as create the Skylark Series for female singer songwriters. In addition, Kierstin has worked with various AIDS and Homeless orginzations in the New York region.

In this interview, recorded at Mustang Sally's Saloon in Manhattan, Kierstin talks about her love for the guitar, her influences, the problems with the mainstream music industry, and gives advice for independent musicians.

Songs Featured in the Podcast:

  1. Let You Slip Away
  2. If I Fell For You
  3. May Day Song

The Couch Sessions Podcast 002: Anthony David

anthonydavid.jpg

Atlanta artist Anthony David is a throwback to the soul legends of the 60s and 70s. On his album, 3 Chords and The Truth, David blends his love of guitar with soulful vocals and soothing melodies.

After growing up in Savannah, Georgia, David moved to the music mecca of Atlanta to pursue his career. While in Atlanta, he developed a friendship with recording artist and Grammy winner India Arie. Anthony's music parallels India's organic soul influences.

David talks to us about his influences, the term “neo soul”, and working with India. His album, 3 Chords & The Truth is in stores now.

Hotel Rwanda debuted on DVD this week, and it is hands down the best movie of 2005. On the Couch Sessions, we played a clip from the movie, which features Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo.

Podcasting: Straight Up

To get a Podcast to your MP3 player, first you have to Download some Podcasting software. The most common Podcast software for Mac users or Windows users with iPods is Ipodder. This is the first and original Podcast software created by Adam Curry (yeah, the MTV guy) and it intergrates well with iTunes.

For all of you who aren’t cool enough to own an iPod, there is the Primetime Podcast Reciever. The PPR doesn???t use iTunes (thank God) and can be used to sync with your MP3 player.

Once you download your player, its time to add your feed. Its really easy to add feeds to your Podcast software. Copy and paste this link to the add screen on the Podcast software:

http://www.thecouchsessions.com/shows/couchsessions.xml

Then click add. The software will automatically download the MP3 file to your computer. After that, you can sync the file to your MP3 player.

Oh…..you DON’T need an iPod to get a Podcast. Any MP3 player will do.
