N.E.R.D. - Everyone’s Nose

Wait a minute? I thought that N.E.R.D. broke up last year? Breakup or no breakup, the group did find some time to drop this new track from their now forthcoming album N.3.R.D., due in Spring 2008. The percussions on this track are insane even if the subject matter doesn’t really make sense (sober). Can’t wait for this album to drop. (via SS)

Vote in the Okayplayer Awards

upd112807.gif

Okayplayer just set up their first ever online awards. Check the site to vote. The application is a little buggy (it just erased my votes when I clicked on another link) but I’m positive that the results will be way better than MTV can come up with.

Is it me, or did the end of the year sneak up on y’all too? Good Lawd, 2007 went by fast. Anyway, I’m starting to compile my lists for the Top Albums and Top Songs of 2007 a month or so in advance. Last years list came off a little half-assed (I got about 5 emails from people saying that I listed a couple songs twice) so the 4 week buffer should give me more than enough time to get it right.

What Ever Happened To……Sagat?

Sagat - Why Is It? (Funk Dat)

The year was 1993. I was flipping channels like I always did at 13 and came across an angry dude complaining about the ills of his life over a repetitive house beat on MTV, back when they actually played videos. Even in the early 90’s something like this track was an anomaly on that channel, which was a mix of grunge and gangsta rap at the time. But somethign about this song struck me. Maybe because it was its sheer simplicity, but most likely because unlike most songs, you can easily add your own lyrics to the track and not skip a beat. We made up our own rendition on the playground: Why is it that Ms. Reese wants to give us three homework assignments in one night???? What is this, high school? FUNK DAT!

Although “Funk Dat” wasn’t the craze that swept the nation, per say, the song did get major MTV play and some radio spins. Having that said though, Sagat is the epitome of the one hit wonder. Even when his one and only “hit” dropped, you couldn’t find any information about the dude. I don’t even think the dude ever even put out an album. Even Skee-Lo managed to drop something close to a full LP. Did the dude even have a record label?

The only time I managed to see him on TV was when he judged some thing at an MTV Spring Break contest back in the day. But that’s it. I can’t even find the dude’s video on YouTube. You know its bad when your hit can’t be found on the site that has Phillipino prisoners doing choreographed dances to Thriller.

Like everybody else in the What Ever Happened… segments, if you have any information about where Sagat is now, let me know in the comments. Hopefully he’s a successfully A&R type like Gerardo and not working at the Home Depot.

Random Ish: Sharon Jones, Kelis

Sharon Jones - 100 Days, 100 Nights

Sharon Jones dropped her new video for 100 Days, 100 Nights, and I’m diggin’ it. Word is that it was directed by Adam Elias Buncher and the cameras used were actually from the 50s and were bought off eBay for $50 each. Word.

All of y’all who hate Amy Winehouse because she stole from Black music or whatever, should do yourselves a favor and cop Ms. Jones’ album or see her when she comes to your town (they share the same backing band). The live show is downright incredible. I’ve seen her twice (in DC and LA) and both times I was the only Black person in the audience. Check out our Sharon Jones interview from last year, while you’re at it.

Kelis Dropped from her Jive

143124__kelis_l.jpg

Kelis - 80’s Joint

So sad. I really think that America never really “got” Kelis. Even though her third album, Tasty, catapulted her to a household name, I think she was never “mainstream” enough for radio and labels to back her and she . Plus, since she was a pet project for the Neptunes, I never thought she was able to find her true voice. Here second album, Wanderland never even dropped in the US, and even though she tried to drop a radio single (”Bossy”) for her last album, Kelis Was Here, has sold less than 150,000 copies to date. I’ve like Kelis from day one because she always seemed to want to redefine the concept of R&B every chance she could get. She still can sell like crazy in the UK and Europe though, so I’m sure that some label will pick her up soon.

I Want Your Soul

Stone can we get a new category labeled “music jerome likes and recommends because it is dope and he has impeccable music taste”? Good look.

On to the goodness. If you don’t own any Armand Van Helden records you suck. Dude has been putting out heaters for 15 years now and is only getting better. His latest single I Want Your Soul is the best song of the summer (F*ck a AY BAY BAY, Wipe Me Down, or Soulja Boy) hands down.

J*Davey Dropped from Warner Brothers???

JDavey

J*Davey - 4000 A.D. Demo

Usually I don’t post about label bullshyt, but since the Couch Sessions has support J*Davey from the jump, I had to post about this.

According to some random post from Okayplayer, J*Davey got dropped from Warner Brothers Records. Right now, I can’t verify if this is true (OKP isn’t exactly the CNN of the hip-hop world) and Filthy doesn’t even know what’s up either, so right now this is straight speculation.

I’m sure that if this is true, there will be all types of petitions and outrage from the blog community but honestly, I can’t be surprised if they do get dropped. I just don’t think major labels are READY for an act like JD. I could easily see a label like Warner getting scared of the prospect of trying to market two Black kids who listen to David Bowie and don’t talk about their Escalades. I think America is ready to think outside the box for a change, but this movement has to happen from the bottom up, not the top down.

Having that said…there are 4 new J*Davey songs that found its way to the Internet this week. Please bump them loud and proud.

Update: Sign the J*Davey petition.
