Next Saturday (Nov 17th) its goin’ down!

DC artist Muhsinah (check our profile from Summer ‘06 is having her listening party down at Bohemian Caverns in support of her new album Daybreak and of course The Couch Sessions is involved. The listening party starts at 10PM and there is a live performance at Midnight. And of course, its all free so you have no excuse!

If you’re reading this and going to be there on Saturday, shoot me an email and I might buy you a drink.

Halloween Party Pictures…aka…

where were the black people? Told y’all to come out. My dance set must have scared some of you away. Funny thing is I played hella hip hop, and didn’t really go past the mainstream club jawns you hear out on the regular. We rocked both floors until past 3 am. All pictures were taken by me with a camera in one hand a bottle of Patron in the other. Jeezy would’ve been proud.

Review: 2007 Black Girls Rock Awards

Black Girls Rock! Is a non-profit organization devoted to mentoring Black women through arts, music, and culture. The orginzaiton was founded by DJ and model Beverly Bond young Black women combat the negative elements that are unfortunately associated with women of color. Contrary to whatever is out in the media these days, not every Black girl is a ho, golddigger, or video vixen, and the main mission of Black Girls Rock! Is to mentor and support Black women through music, fashion, and the arts.

The second annual Black Girls Rock! Awards took place at the Lincoln Center for Jazz at the Time Warner Center in New York City, during VH1 Hip-Hop Honors weekend. The awards show is a fund raiser to send girls to the DJ Scratch Academy. In addition, the organization handed 10 awards to Black people who are an inspiration to males and females alike.

Awards went out to such famous names as Common and Missy Elliott, as well as some not so-household names like Lisa Evers and Sylvia Rhone. A special “Monument Award” was also given out to the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team, who were on the receiving end of Don Imus’ “Nappy Headed Ho’s” comment. Unfortunately the basketball players were not at the event, but they received a standing ovation anyway.

And of course, there was music. Performers included, Chrisette Michelle (who I really need to catch up on cause she’s the truth!), Black female country artist Rissi Palmer, the wonderful Emily King, Jean Baylor (formerly of Zhane), and Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry, who in a shy timid British accent set behind the piano and admitted she didn’t know what to play, but brought the house down with her rendition of “Say Yes.” (Seriously people, homegirl is on point, and nice as hell too.)

Of course, with any award show–from your 6th Grade talent completion all the way up to the Grammys–there will always be your technical difficulties, mistakes, and no-shows. But let’s forget about that. This was an event showcasing the best in Black culture. Many people asked the question Saturday night– “Why isn’t this on TV?” I kept asking myself the same thing. Why in the hell isn’t BET, TV One, or even VH1 all over this?

But TV or no TV, as a Black man, I’m inspired by all of the positive Black women that were in the house that night. Sometimes its so rare to see positive images of Black people that it’s almost like we take the negativity for granted.

New York Sh*t

So tonight I’m jump on the Chinatown Jewishtown white man’s bus to NYC. Yes, I know that the Hip-Hop Honors thing happened last night, but Viacom didn’t deem me worthy enough to get a ticket. (That’s the third time Viacom! No love for the MTV Awards or the BET Awards this summer! And to think I watched all the episodes of Flavor of Love!)

Anyway, as a consolation prize I will be getting access to some ultra fly events in the city this weekend. VH1, Brooklyn Bodega, New Yorker magazine, and others are putting on events all weekend, many of which are free. Check out the full schedule here.

New Yorker Party with Diplo @ Hiro Ballroom

This party is being co-sponsored by VH1 and The New Yorker Magazine. I’m not getting into NYC until at least 10, then I have to roll up to Harlem and drop off my stuff, so I won’t be getting into this party until at least midnight. But it’s Diplo with Catchdubs as an opener so it should be a good look. And this Hiro place looks straight outta Kill Bill.

Panel Discussions @ Power House Arena

Hopefully I will be up in time to head down to the Powerhouse Arena for their panel discussion entitled, “The Birth of a Legend: A discussion of VH1 Hip Hop Honoree A Tribe Called Quest.” Problem is that it starts at 12 noon so I won’t roll in there until at least 1.

Celebrity guests and honorees include Gabrielle Union (host), Missy Elliott, Susan Taylor, Common, Cassie, designer Tracy Reese, DJ Diamond Kuts, chef Marcus Samuelsson, actress Sonja Sohn, and other surprise guests!

I highly doubt if I can get into this event, which is a shame because it would be amazing to be in the presence of such great Black women. Oh well. Next year??
