DC People: Lupe Fiasco, Flex Matthews, Asheru

Asheru - Boondock’s Theme
Flex Matthews - For Yourself

This is downright crazy. Lupe Fisaco is finally doing a proper show in DC at the 9:30 club, and he has local MC’s Flex Matthews and Asheru taking the stage as openers. Since a lot of our readers aren’t from DC, I take it of you haven’t heard of Flex, but Asheru recorded that little known theme song for The Boondocks on Cartoon Network. (”I am the stone that the builder refused…” and all that jazz.)

Something like this makes me dig Lupe even more. The dude is supporting local hip-hop acts. Would Jay-Z do this? Or Jeezy? I doubt it. The reason I’m making such a fuss about this is that this is one of the suggestions that I was going to propose at the local music summit that I’m planning for May: Have local artists open for national touring acts.

Its an easy idea, but its not often practiced in DC, which is sad, because although we’re overshadowed by Baltimore, Philly, and of course, NYC, this city has a long and storied roster of hip-hop. And lets not get started about go-go…

For the record, I’m gonna be at 9:30. Although I hate going to hip-hop shows there, I have to support Lupe and the “scene.” Let me know if you’re rollin’ through.

Lupe Fiasco with Asheru and Flex Matthews
9:30 Club

On an unrelated note, the owners of the 9:30 club are worried that the club might close because the city just signed a letter of intent for the (Clear Channel owned) House of Blues to open downtown. That would just be messed up.

You Can Find Me…..On H St. NE?

So as of now, I’ve just been put onto The Red and The Black as well as The Rock and Roll Hotel. Has anybody been yet? Are they concert halls or 930 club type spots? On H St NE?

Man 15 kids got robbed out there a few weekend MORNINGS ago waiting in line to cop Js so the area isn’t completely devoid of the local, um flavor, but venues like that are a great look for any neighborhood. I know there are condos going up on 4th and H, are they still going to open a Whole Foods around there?

Is this a case of gentrification or improving the neighborhood? Are area go-go bands going to be playing in these venues or is it strictly a rock-techno DJ kind of spot? Someone drop some knowledge.

The Roots, Talib Kweli and The Pharcyde @ Club Fur

Update: EVENT IS SOLD OUT

WHAT?

The Roots are coming to DC and I wasn’t alerted? Damn, it seems like my sources don’t love me anymore.

But anyway, this looks like DC is set for another hot show. The Roots always bring a dope live show (word is that they do a dope rendition of Laffy Taffy and Roll Wit It, Rock Wit It), and the Pharcyde (unfortunately sans Fatlip) is worth the price of admission alone.

Event Information:
Thursday, July 13, 2006
8:00 PM - 12:00 AM
21+
cover: $20.00

Venue Information:
Fur Nightclub DC
33 Patterson Street, NE

Kicked to da Curb

I hope y'all aren’tgoing to try and hit up Yuca tonight.

Cause they just got evicted. Not only that, but their ish got put out on the street like the baby daddy of a woman scorned.

0608yuca2.jpg

Notice that couch? That’s the same one from The Couch Sessions lounge that we sponsored at the Flow event back in February (you can kind of see it on the flyer). They threw out The Couch Sessions couch! WTF???

0608yuca3.jpg

Amd some more “only in DC ish:”

Making beeping noises, one guy pushed a dark-colored sofa down the sidewalk. But then another man claimed dibs on the couch, causing the first guy jab his finger menacingly at him and threaten to abscond with the couch if he walked away again. The second guy eventually dragged the sofa across the street with a friend’s help. Other folks drove off with potted palms and carried away bone-white saucers by hand.

Seeing some dude push a couch down 18th street “making beeping noises” in broad daylight is priceless.

Okay, so I don’twanna make light of a situation, but this is hands down one of the funniest things I've seen this week.

Thursdays: Just Bcus

Although Rome might be convinced that DC nightlife sucks, I'm not giving up on the Chocolate Caramel City yet. I don’tknow if I’ll be able to make it to Nema this Thursday (I’ll be in the area, but I have other obligations), but if they pull off half of what they promise on the flyer then its a good look for District nightlife. More info at the MySpace site.

Why Does DC Suck?

I mean this is a question born out frustration, observation, and plain old wonder. How can Washington DC, one of the 3 major cities on the east coast (Boston doesn’tcount to me cuz…no one talks about it, i still see u Southie), have such a weak nightlife and scene? In the last 24 months 2 parties that catered to funk/soul/hip hop have been cancelled, the club closed, or whatever and now people are forced to go places that are so-so.

I had a post all ready to go about how DCs nightlife and music scene pretty much suck, but I’m only one person so let me know (LEAVE COMMENTS PEOPLE) your opinion of the DC scene (nightlife, local hip hop, indie rock, techno/house, etc.) - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Calendar

artist_pic.jpg

Damn, May/June is gonna be hot in DC. In more ways than one. But we need to get some solid DJ nights back in this city. (Hint hint).

Friday, 5/5 @ The Black Cat - W.Ellington, Kev Brown and RPM - These are three acts that show the world that DC is for real when it comes to hip-hop and not just an afterthought.

Saturday, 5/6 - Van Hunt @ Jin - Yeah, you read this right. Van Hunt is coming to DC, again. (Didn’the swear that he wouldn’tplay The District again?) And he’s playing at Jin, which is supposed to be the hot spot on 14th and U. Oh, and this is being co-produced by Fusicology. Does that mean that Aysa’s bringing more events to DC? Let’s hope so.

Monday, 5/8 - The Lucky Bastards @ Black Cat - Banned in DC alumni, The Lucky Bastards are playing a full set this time, at the Black Cat backstage.

Sunday, 5/14 - Ice Cube, The Clipse @ 9:30 Club - Damn, I’m gonna be on my way back from South Carolina and I had free tickets to this show! Ice Cube is definitely going to throw down, but I think everyone is waiting to see what the Clipse is gonna do.

Thursday, 5/18 - Lupe Fiasco @ ???
- Don’tknow too many details about this show. Hopefully it will pop off at either the Black Cat or 9:30. If you have any info about this, hit me up.
