Hip-Hop, Negroclash!, R&B

Just Added: Gnarls Barkley at 9:30 Club, Other Shows

DC is getting some fly shows lately! They’re not free like our friends in New York , but I still can’t complain.

Gnarls Barkley at 9:30 Club - August 5th

Show just added today. Gnarls is rocking 9:30 with (er, transvestite fronted) Hercules Love Affair on August 5th. I saw Gnarls at the MCI Center when they opened for Red Hot Chili Peppers, but to see them at a club as small as 9:30 will be a treat. Tickets go on sale today at 10 AM.

Other shows to check out next month:

July 7th - Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, 9:30 Club
July 8th - Rza As Bobby Digital Feat. Stone Mecca, 9:30 Club
July 11th - Platinum Pied Pipers, Black Cat
July 16th - DJ Shadow, 9:30 Club
July 18th - Clipse, Club Five
July 19th - George Clinton And Parliament Funkadelic, 9:30 Club
July 25th - Anthony David, Black Cat
July 28th - MGMT, 9:30 Club

Also, in September:
Sept 21st - Mos Def Big Band, Kennedy Center

Heads Up: DC is about to mess up intercity bus service

I don’t dip into local politics (I read DC City Desk and Upset the Setup for those things), but I know this might affect a lot of our readers.

Heads up to everybody that use the Chinatown buses from DC to New York. The District is enacting rules that will severely limit intercity bus service by forcing all buses to pickup and drop off passengers at L’Enfant Plaza as well as putting an end curbside ticket sales. Not only that, but there are new charges, regulations, paperwork, etc that will drive up prices and slow down services.

This is a fuck up in a city of many fuck ups. These actions will essentially shut down many of the Chinese bus operators since their offices are located in Chinatown, as well as send some bus companies across the border to Virginia and Maryland.

Word on the street that these changes are going to take place on July 3rd, but that hasn’t been confirmed by any news sources. Since the city has never publicly notified anyone of the changes, most bus operators don’t even know about it and haven’t notified their customers. I’ll keep y’all posted on what develops.

Flex Matthews On Tour

Flex Matthews - Catwoman

My homie Flex hit me up to let y’all know that he’s going on tour with Kosha Dillz on what he’s calling The Rappers Friends Tour.

If you don’t know, Flex has been on the DC hip-hop scene for a minute now, grinding for years now. His style is quintessentially old school hip-hop, with emphasis on rap battles and live shows over bullets and bling. This approach has gotten the dude honors from URB magazine as well as the Warped Tour and opened for such notables as KRS-One and the Wu-Tang Clan.

I’ve seen this dude battle at a street corner cypher and the dude is fierce, and he always brings his live shows to the next level. Flex is touring to promote his new solo LP He Was Like This When I Got Here, making stops around the southeast as well as Alaska. (Any Couch readers out there?) If he’s in your town, the performance is definitely worth checking out.

Flex will also be opening for Clipse on July 18th at Club Five.

Friday June 13th - Anchorage AK, Players House of Rock
Saturday June 14th - homer AK, Club Fusion
Thursday June 19th - New Brunswick NJ, Court Tavern

More Pictures: Seeing Sounds Album Listening Party (Part 2)

Other than that damn picture of me below, the Seeing Sounds Listening Party was off the chain. DC came out in full effect, even if some of y’all thought Pharrell was going to show. For a split second, I did think I saw Chad Hugo for a second though. Anyway, if you didn’t go, you missed out on the free alcohol, the copious amounts of Red Bull (I was wired), and the cutest bartender this side of Virginia Beach.

That N.E.R.D. album is amazing. Buy it tomorrow. More pictures at the Flickr Photostream and DC’s newest music blog, All Our Noise.

Hip-Hop, Negroclash!

Live: Saul Williams/Dragons of Zynth at 9:30 Club

For some reason, DC crowds always surprise me. I honestly wasn’t expecting anyone to be at the 9:30 club based on this city’s so-so track record with live music, and of course again, I was proven wrong last night. Everybody and their mama was out last night: from afropunks, blipsters, hip-hop heads, rednecks, fratboy douchebags, nubile high school girls, hipsters, gentrifyers to non-dancing Jewish chicks. Damn, Saul Williams is a uniter. Maybe he should run for president?

Funny thing is, the people you would least expect (the douchebag frat boys) knew every single word to all of his songs.

New York band Dragons of Zynth (flanked by two of Shepard Fairey’ Obama posters) opened up for Saul, and although they were a worthy opener, I almost felt like I had to be high to get into them. They’re songs were disjointed as hell and no sober person in the audience could understand them.

Saul, however, was off the chain. I know that this dude isn’t most of you guys’ cup of tea, but seriously, this dude is one of the best performers I’ve seen on stage in a long time. I didn’t know what to expect, but I had a feeling that it would be a super energetic show. During the hour and a half set, Saul and his three piece band ran through almost all of his hits from his self title album and his newest Trent Reznor produced The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! Of course, “List of Demands,” (Nike ftw?) and “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” got the biggest responses. And yeah, Saul brought out his daughter for some songs, giving new meaning to “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy.”

Video after the jump. Check the whole gallery at Flickr.

UK Sounds

Ty in DC Tonight

Dammit! I saw on Ty’s MySpace bulletin that he was going to be in DC and I didn’t even put two and two together. Ty? In DC? NAW….it can’t be!

Ty feat Roots Manuva - So You Want More (Refix)

Anyway, if you’re up for checking out some great UK Hip-Hop, roll over to Marvin tonight for a FREE performance. Unfortunately I already have plans (Saul Williams at 9:30 club), but might roll over EARLY to stalk one of the greatest UK rappers of all time cause I’m a stan like that. (via Upset The Setup)

Ty will also be in NYC this weekend as well.
