Kool Herc’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

cover025_low-new2.jpg

The Beatles album cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club band gets remixed with the greatest artists from hip-hop and Black Culture. Not only does this dude redo the album, but the inside cover, the liner notes, and the who’s who diagram as well. This probably one of the best projects I’ve seen on the Internet in a long time.

Check out the full post and info here. Much props to this dude, whoever he is. (link from Soul Sides, where the haters are taking over the comments section)

Fashion: Parish Nation

Parish Nation

Parish Nation is the new clothing company started by former Enyce member Chaka Wilson in New York. The fashion is definitely a throwback to the mid to late 80’s era of NYC Hip-Hop. The concept is a mix of high art and fashion: bright colors, flamboyant design, large prints, etc. The influences for the line mix everything from Andy Warhol to Grandmaster Flash.

I was never a big fan of Enyce, but I’m diggin’ the design of P Nation and the non corporate ascetic to what they do. And the artwork is by far some of the best stuff I’ve seen on a T-Shirt design. The dudes were nice enough to send me one of their signature Tees, and people around DC are already starting to ask about it. Right now, I don’t know where you get these styles outside of NYC, but check their website for more details.

R.I.P.

Theres nothing else to talk about except the Virginia Tech shooting event. I’m sure you’ve seen it all over the news by now but there really isn’t a song dope enough or event ill enough to not speak on this. R.I.P. to those who were killed and our prayers and thoughts go out to the families and friends of the victims.

London Day 3 - London Graf Tour

One thing that amazes me about London is how American this place actually is. Its even more evident since I’ve lived here. They have Wal-Mart people. That’s bad.

But there are still areas of the LDN that haven’t been taken over by Starbucks. The Brick Lane area of the city, a former Jewish hood is becoming a haven for street art, most notably Banksy, who got his start here.

Anyway, here’s just a taste of some of the Graf and street art that’s around Brick Lane. I’ll put up more pics soon. Repect to Miss Hipstah for the find.

G. Dep’s ill-fated romance with street life serves
as a cautionary tale for kids blinded by bling

There are many problems with hip-hop music — there’s misogyny and vulgarity, and far too many artists insist on maintaining a connection to real-world violence.

But one of the worst problems — one that rarely gets talked about — is the way young artists get picked up, financially exploited and unceremoniously dumped.

The fact that many of the record execs doing the exploiting are black doesn’t matter. Young kids with talent who dream of hooking up with moguls like Jay-Z, P. Diddy and Russell Simmons should know the sad, infuriating story of rapper G. Dep, whose real name is Trevell Coleman.

Dep sat down to talk with me last week — two days after getting released from jail — about the ups and downs that took him from the top of the music charts to a cell on Rikers Island.

We met at the Daily News Harlem Bureau, better known as Amy Ruth’s Home-Style Southern Cuisine on 116th St. near Lenox Ave. Dep was with a neighborhood pal, Eddie Gibbs, who is acting as his manager.

I could hardly believe the quiet, wary man across the table from me was the same G. Dep who made the hip-hop classic “Special Delivery,” which carried an infectious beat and a video that introduced the world to the wiggly dance called the Harlem Shake.

Go online, and you can find videos of kids from Korea to the suburbs of Connecticut doing the Harlem Shake. I figured Dep would be rich, or at least comfortable, and a long way from his tough upbringing in East Harlem’s James Weldon Johnson housing projects.

That’s not how it turned out. Read the rest of this entry »

UH OH!! HERE I GO!!

The man right chea is out of jail. Can’t front dude had some killer cuts from the mid to late 90s, and I’m sure if he gets some more Neptunes tracks he can hav a Snoop-esque career comeback. Anyone know if KLC is still making beats?
