While the results for Wall Lords Asia unfold before international viewers and make us feast on an altogether different level of script-ability, this competition is also revealing itself to move into a super-visual gear rocking forward the epic reach of graffiti. Malaysia’s winning crew has just been announced and the first prize has gone to KL Zinc Nite Crew. This means that they will be heading for the grand finale in Shanghai later this year, representing Malaysia. Next is Wall Lords Philippines scheduled for August 7, and the ante rises, rises, colour-rises.

Flickr Photostream

The pieces, tags, and throw ups bombed by writers in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia are incredible elaborate murals. They seem to turn the areas they strike into a customised book of history, writing itself with the invigorating breath of graffiti. All this inspiration is captured by many a graffiti writer in Asia. Here are a few names :

Flip 1, in Manila, writes experimenting with the Baybayin style script, could it be that he and artists like him are rewriting the Philippines’ iconography? Flip 1 says he belongs to the pioneers of graffiti art in the Philippines and that he started bombing in the 90s. He formed the SBA crew with Flow 1 and together they have become major influences in Filipino graffiti.

The artist from Singapore that has blown the frontiers of my conception for colours and shapes is Slacsatu. His pieces explodes on murals: elaborate, full blown, full grown photo-graff pieces.

Slacsatu’s work is in a sense whole stories on a wall.

Having won the second prize of Wall Lords Malaysia, Phobia Klik is a must to look up, together with The Super Sunday crew in Kuala Lumpur, one of the most energising Crews to my eyes, at least that I have come across .

I particularly like the paint-flow of Tha-B and his inter-play of bright, inviting colours.

The work of graffiti artists from Indonesia carries so much vitality that I am sure that if you stroke it, even slightly, it would charge you full up of boyant, unexplainable happiness. Artcoholic Crew in Jakarta bears a name that speaks volumes as to their scope and aim. Darbotz, in Bandung, who also writes ‘Monster’, is a writer who graffs grey scaled lines that make flesh-like cuts. Intricate, intertwined, resembling primal monsters : the ‘monster in diguise’ he says.

Zany13 from Jakarta started doing graffiti around 2003, his profile says. He is part of the well known crew MASE (Mad Artists Striking Existence), together with NSANE5 and SAME33. His graffitis range from name throw ups to full images, and well, I just love his work.

The FAB Family crew (Flagrant Act of Bombing), a name that graffiti writer Cheztwo invented, is a crew from Bandung. The result of all the individual writers is an ebullient, dynamic vision.

I have discovered all these artists through the wealth contained in ‘Graffiti Asia’ a book by authors Ryo Sanada and Suridh Hassan, the creatives behind SRK (www.thesrk.com). They previously published a book on graffiti in Japan and have just dropped ‘Graffiti Asia’, the first book that looks into the graffiti movement there. These two writers have been going around Asia, interviewing themselves graffiti artists, photographing and recording their work on site. It’s a fantastic contribution and head up to the productive art scene and to graffiti, as a movement to be reckoned with. A documentary is part of the story they tell in their book. Watch this space for the trailer and a little tour of their brilliant work.

Finally, a LOUD hellooooooo and thank you to www.tembokbomber.com, www.pylox-world.tk, www.wall-lords.com, www.thedarbotz.com , www.zany13worldhome.blogspot.com, www.fabfamilyfoundation.com and Fat Cap for all the information and visual treats they provide and for allowing picture download!

Far far across many a wall, great and small … well far away from where I sit counting … runs the great wall of Shenzhen in China. It isn’t your usual weather beaten, human watching and saddened sort of wall, it is of the slender bodied, winding cemented kind, dancing to the rhythm of its own rays, sprays and strokes of colours. Whence? Whereth and who-eth you ask? Welcome to graffiti in Asia.

Let’s go back in time a bit: Asia – and by this large-compassed geographical designation I mean China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia (Japan will come later seperately if you fancy it) – has a deep rooted tradition of draughtmanship and the exploration of script via calligraphy. Based on this alone perhaps it is not surprising that graffiti is drawing to and from its fertile bossom a partircularly inspired crowd of writers who range their craft from tags to astoundingly intricate compositions in roman alphabet, Kanji, Thai, Baybayin, and in full-on pictorial dimensions.

Asia is of course an area of oceanic-mamouth proportions and it would be suicidal for the mind to attempt a cataloguing of graffiti at such an early stage in the developing of this art there. But one can take a dip. Graffiti in Asia generally is relatively young, having appeared around the 90s – even later in certain areas – and now-happening-now is graffiti in the making, Asian style.

So it came about that on the Shenzhen wall – not the first occurrence of graffiti in Asia nor the last but part of the whole graffiti scene – and in Shenzhen city itself, as well as all over Asia, graffiti artists are leaving their imprints in what for me was a jaw dropping revelation – picture it: the Shenzhen wall is possibly the largest graffiti wall of China. This is awesomely surpr-affitiying, so starting from there, dizzy and with insatiable visual hunger here are just a few names I am coming to know:

YYY, NAN and SINIC are graffiti writers from Shenzhen who work in bold shades of candy pink or flamboyant greens for example, but more than its bright hues it is the elongated forms of their letters which make their graffitis look as if they are travelling on the walls rather than resting there.

From Ghangzhou, I just discovered POPIL, a major illustrator in China… and a girl, hurray! She is one inspired pen-gunning artist.

My favourite so far is DAL, a graffiti writer in Wuhan, his graffitis are edgy and their dimension very sophisticated, with interlacing saber shaped letters.

Mr Lan is a solid name in Shanghai, in fact perhaps one of the most reknown graffiti artists in China. He recently opened a tatoo parlour moving his touch to skin art.

REDY is a graffiti artist based in Hong Kong and who, like Xeme, uses the kanji script. I particularly like his style because he works shades around his letters that make the whole graff pop out of the wall, bouncing off away from its viewer.

Initially, I had not quite grasped the numbers of crews and their prominence wherever graffiti happened to be, and I was mostly honing in on individuals’ art work but through looking into Asia, I am now gauging the might of creation in groups and the bustling spirit of graffiti crews. Those that grabbed my attention (and this is by no means representative of all the talent out there) are the well known Oops Crew in Shanghai (with a notable girl member named Tin.g), the JNJ Crew created by Yoo In-Joon and Im-Dong-Ju in Seoul, and BAI*PMT in Bangkok.

REACH in Taipei is possibly my favourite so far in the picture style of graffiti. You know when you look at a graffiti, you see rocking the scene and the craddle the artist’s creativity. The shapes of the graffiti artist’s name and the colours chosen are like a wake up slap to a dimension of seeing with someone else’s mind rather than one’s own eyes. Writers like REACH, are a door further, not a entry door, built in bold and transformed cheeky letters. It is encryption at its best.

Although I could not find an image to post here, I’d like to mention POYD from Chiang Mai, Thailand, who is so versatile. I do not know if the different photos of his work I have seen are from several years in sequence or if they represent the same time frame, so I cannot tell if his versatility emanates from a change in his work over the years or if he is, as I suspect, a really talented graffiti script-explorer. All the same, when he bombs the walls tremble!

Taking place now is the Wall of Lords Asia 2010, a massive showcasing of writers and crews opening space for paint bombing through a competition. It is opened for China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Some amazing work is going to spring from there, not a shadow of a doubt on spray can for sure.

This little black and white, lettered portal I am scripting here is only a mention of those artists I prefer, do drop names and links of those you know, please.

Our dip into Asian graffiti is far from over though, what do you say we go to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and sit for a newly released documentary?

Quote: —“I guess I was better at constructing garments than buildings,”

I could not find all what I wanted to on Adam Kimmel, so I’m assuming he is intensely private, but whatever the case may be he is what I have been searching for in a menswear designer. You will not find skinny tailored suits where the men’s pants are showcasing more than just stitching and fabric (similar to a girl’s camel toe). Adam Kimmel’s collections boast masculinity and movement all while being sophisticated. I recently came across his new Spring/Summer 2011 collection that draws inspiration from Snoop Dogg and I just had to put him in the designer to watch spotlight.

Adam Kimmel was born and raised in New York and found his way into fashion through his love of architecture (he has a degree in it from NYU) and contemporary art. He founded his brand in 2002 and has become well known for his ability to create incredibly well cut classic menswear. But it’s his lookbooks that have garnered so much attention. He uses his circle of friends which include Dan Colen (artist based in NYC known for painted sculptures), Aaron Bondaroff (NYC based entrepreneur), and the late great Dennis Hopper as models to present his vision all while being shot by famed Andy Warhol lensman Gerard Malanga. With all this inspiration surrounding Adam Kimmel, who wouldn’t want to invade his private thoughts.

On Saturday 06.12.10 graffiti artists, djs, emcees, bboys and bgirls from all over gathered on a roped off block to celebrate hip hop: exchanging ideas, listen to great music, tag the walls and dance their asses off. There were kids everywhere, people cooking out, vendor booths set up, performances, non-stop music from various djs, breakdancing battles and of course graffiti.

The BBOY BBQ is back! For the 1st time ever it was held in West Philly at The Square (48th/50th & Westminster Ave. between 48th & Lancaster Ave. & 52nd St).

The BBOY BBQ has been on hiatus since 2007. Aul Purpis (0f 84 and GARGANTUANS) approached Pose2 (one of the BBOY BBQ founders) about having it in 2010 in his neighborhood where he grew up. After planning and preparation with his crew, the BBOY BBQ came and went with much success.

Whew! June 12th was HOT. It was even hotter on the chartered shuttle that was supposed to take us to Fredericksburg, which decided to break down on U St. It was 5pm and we were a half hour behind schedule. Me and my dos chicas, Jendayi and Grav, stood out in the hot-ass-shade with lady-like perspiration turning into unlady-like sweat, we talked about the in.fa.mousIKB whose show we were, at this point, late for.

Who is that you ask? Well you have met her here on The Couch Sessions before. Imani K. Brown is an artist in the most simple and complex use of the word.

We were anxious to get to Fredericksburg, VA to see the solo exhibition, “The MISS-Adventures of Indian Pussy”. Up pulls a blue sedan with dark tinted windows and a driver with a ponytail who looked like Antonio Banderas (which PR rep, Jorge Lander brought to our attention later in the evening). We were on our way… well not quite we had to take a detour to Lincolnia, VA first to pick up a 15 passenger van to high tail it down the road an hour to Fredericksburg.

An hour passes…

We arrive in a quaint little city with signs pointing out the way to downtown Fredericksburg. We pass Honky Tonk Tattoos, plantation-like houses, a man in a dusty old American flag tee-shirt and a cool little vintage shop which was our signal that we were entering the funkier part of the city. We take a left on Caroline Street and roll to the end of the block to 1025. After our 2 hour mis-adventure with the charter bus we were finally there.

Enter… three brown girls.

The spot was called Spaghetti Project, a boutique for designer toys and home of the brand Chief Rocker, owned by husband and wife team Arlene and Edgar Munoz. DJ Ragz had my head nodding as soon as we walked. Mixing, scratching, cutting; creating new blends and sounds, Ragz gets two thumbs up.

The shop has exciting pockets of eye candy like KidRobot, MINDstyle, the Chief Rocker tees, custom skate decks from various artists – all HOT! I was able to pull myself away to the gallery space located in the back of the shop. What I like the most about the exhibit was the light, airiness of the art as well as the evening itself. Not only was this the opening reception for the exhibit but it marked Imani’s 30th birthday. It was a real celebration equipped with an emcee cipher, artsy fartsy folks, b-boys, art and tasty food! I was greeted by the most familiar of Imani’s work – tats and kicks at the front of the gallery. Moving further into the exhibition I met Miss Indian Pussy herself and a whole new range of what Imani K. Brown is bringing to the table. I have seen Imani’s work on many an arm, leg and foot walking around Washington DC, the girl has got skills! Fashion. Cartooning. Painting. Customizing. Tattooing.

You know how artists do. Paint it, deconstruct it, reconstruct it; whatever they imagine they can express. Indian Pussy is Imani’s boisterous alter-ego from Côte d’ Ivoire in the cartoon form of a pussycat. “The Miss-Adventures of Indian Pussy” is a creative look into the mishaps and lessons of life with its many cast of characters. From skateboard decks to large wooden mounts, bike bodies, de-constructed guitars, and CLOTHES with live models, Imani is building a brand with Indian Pussy.

The exhibition gave us a taste of the cartoon which has Indian Pussy with an ice cream cone… but not for long. To see how it all plays out check out www.artisticsole.com on Wed, June 16 and Celebrate Comic Book Day with the OFFICIAL release of “The MISS-Adventures of Indian Pussy” to the public.

After checking the exhibit and coveting some tee-shirts we re-boarded the charter van to head back to DC.

An hour passed…

We arrived to find the original chartered bus with the driver STILL in the same place with the same problem. The evening ended full circle!

The world is being rewritten in coloured bombs, its waves the shape of spray cans. Its name is Graffiti. Massively unleashed by the gods of Art in the 60s in Philadelphia and very quickly thereafter in NYC, tinted bursts and lacquered explosions hit subways and streets from then on: a new iconography has been born: Brazil.

As a response to an oppressive political regime and suffocating economical situation, Graffiti lead its inspired children by the paint and brush in the streets of São Paulo. It is from this city that an impressive number of visionary graffiti writers have been surging to the fore of the arts’ bastions since the 80s. Creative-mamoths Vitché, Zezao, Nunca and Os Gémeos are some of the city’s foremost emanations, now touring the world – amongst them the notable Titi Freak – and their work is now snatched by paint-thirsty galleries and collectors, sought and appreciated by a growing worldwide fan base.

Os Gémeos (the twins) are perhaps the most intriguing of them all. Brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, started graffitiying in 1987 and have since gone on to tag together as a duo. Their mark is a distinctive yellow hue which is present in all their depictions. Their work varies from simple tags to complex and detailed murals, covering whole building heights. They say their representations stem from two realms: scenes from the conscious world which stirred their imagination, and scenes from their dreams – dreams that as twins they share. Their drawn and spray-painted characters always bear an introspective look, a hinted smile or held-in tear, painted-thinkers in the midst of the surreal environments Os Gémeos create for them.

One common trait to every single one of these Brazilian graffistas is: the Pixaçao.

Pixaçao is a fascinating graffiti style, a social movement even, born in the streets of São Paulo and exclusive to Brazil, with the VÍCIO crew its first manifestation in São Paulo. The well known, critically poor redistribution of wealth and non existent social opportunities, have doomed several innocent generations of youths and elderly combined, enclosing them in what we know as favelas. Favela ‘residents’ are not only surviving under duress and in the most dire of living conditions, but what is more important : they are not recognised, helped nor acknowledged one iota by their fellow wealthier neighbours. A negation of existence from a government entity is to be expected, historical almost, but when it is from the people next door: it angers.

This is where Pixaçao started. With nothing to lose and a hunger for life exacerbated by fight-or-die conditions, groups of graffistas started pouring silently into the city’s wealthy quarters every night to tag on a grand scale. So that their work would be in full view once day broke they devised to write their names with make-shift brushes on DIY poles on the entire length of buildings, climbing up balconies in the middle of the night, and jumping from roof top, to poles, to roof top … needless to say with no net. Many have fallen to their death, those that are caught by the police are beaten and humiliated. But for a pixador who has finally found a way to speak to those who ignore, these risks are no deterrent. The fever of the pixaçao has taken over and given them release. In paint they exist. In brush they reclaimed: identity, individuality and creativity.

The pixaçao is a tagged name, its style is typical in its straight batton-like letters. A large number of these men and girls have had no access to education and many of them are illiterate in the academic sense. Through pixaçao they have invented a new alphabet so that while many pixadores cannot read nor write, they can read and write pixaçaos. It has become their own language, communication and graphs. The debate surrounding pixaçaos and its right to ‘be’ is at an all time high in Brazil with the establishment entagonising two sides of the same whole. It defines on one side graffity as art, for fame proclaimed the worthy. On the other side are made to stand the pixadores, who are said to be vandals and who ‘pollute’ Sao Paulo and Rio.

That is why I like Os Gémeos so much, their name alone is a metaphor for what is occurring in Brazil now. The twins: graffiti legalised v. the ‘illegal’ street art. Two entities born of the same womb, attached yet independent. Like Os Gémeos, when these two sides work together as one they metamorphose into an unmatchable epic talent. Perhaps one day, when the pixadores’ social plight has been addressed in real terms then their deeply creative sensitivity can concentrate and work together with the classical (and commercial) art world.

A young emerging representative of the graffiti movement of São Paulo is Mundano (Mundo + Humano, i.e. the world + human). A painter and graffiti artist, Mundano’s revolution fights in deep colours. The face that Mundano depicts in most of his work, his mark I should say, is a totem like visage on which the beads of knowing eyes, an ancient mask-like face, speaks its thoughts in bubbles. One of Mundano’s project sets him as a mediator between the people and the people: those who work the hardest and meanest jobs in the streets of São Paulo, and those who revel in its richer basin. This project is the ‘Carroceiros’. The carroceiros are men who pull wooden carts to street-clean. Theirs is a gruelling job for their massive carts is not powered by engines but by their bodies alone. They recycle paper and are typically despised by a certain thoughtless class lingering in the latest motors. In answer to this Mundano paints the carts with his recognisable colours and mask, with messages such as ‘If I could I would recycle politicians’, ‘Peace is not enough’, ‘I recycle what about you?’, etc. His message goes both ways: a two way street to an open dialogue, honest and intelligent. Mundano was in New York tagging in Brooklyn recently. The graffiti touring world would be enriched if galleries and collectors would bring him and his work to the Northern hemisphere.

So, the breath of Graffiti follows the oceans’ currents. Opposite the American continent it emerged in the Mediterranean, in Toulouse, spray-writing on the map its women graffistas names.

Last Friday night was the first of the two night opening of Activation 440, the Artist Bazaar. Presented by ReadySetDC and No Kings Collective, the show presented a mix of artists that mostly use a cross between street and pop art aesthetics, though there were some interesting photography and modern art in the midst. Now the interesting thing about ReadySetDC’s Activations is that the very space the art is presented tend to be places under construction in one way or another. The previous Activation 2719 was also a collab between ReadySetDC and No Kings Collective, it taking place within a rowhouse (2719) in Columbia Heights. This time, for Activation 440, it was all under the roof The Josephine, a new condominium complex around the Howard-Shaw area.

Now the idea of having art galleries and shows pop up in these location is a pretty good idea since it definitely projects and advances the aesthetics many of the works in the show present. It also appeals to the growing number of people who are interested in the mix of modern art and street art. At the same time the setup gave an opportunity for artists to transform and customize their own rooms to fit their artworks. The Kelly Towles room comes to mind, “The Peepshow”, warning us of the nasty XXX nature of her room on the walls, her work incorporates, of course, the peepshow and images, that otherwise might be considered porn, into cartoon elements using her own style prevalent in her own street art. Creating a unique caricature and commentary with her work, the room with its all black walls and writings/”warnings” on the walls was the best example of Activation 440′s original statement about space, artist and artwork. Get her exact words (and more installation photos) with ReadySetDC here.

Personally, Gaia again managed to get my attention on his whole wall spanning murals – like ink drawings made from spray paint. And also, I found myself taking another look at the mixed media artist Sarah Martin, this being the first time her work is displayed in this way. The gallery also featured the paintings of Aniekan Udofia, including a lot from his two prominent subjects, Obama and Biggie, and instead of street art itself, painting about street art. Get his words with ReadySetDC here.

UK street artist Banksy has been on a roll lately, dropping his first feature film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, and going on a non-stop graffiti tour of the US and Canada. He’s already hit San Fran, Chicago, Toronto (most of which were painted over or removed unfortunately) and now New York City, which marked his first (!) time in the city. The art above is downright amazing. Check it.

For those of you who are into street art, you are probably very familiar with the ultra-reclusive Banksy, who became famous for spraying dope graffiti art on walls and bridges in the middle of the night without ever being seen – only to leave the public absolutely puzzled in the morning. His work has shown up everywhere from the Israeli West Bank and New Orleans to Disneyland and now to take it to the next level he has directed a feature length film (that dazzled at this year’s Sundance Film Festival) which is set to be released in select theaters here in the States this month.

The documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop is being billed as “the world’s first street art disaster movie.” It is directed by Banksy – whose true identity has long been a mystery – and narrated by the Welsh actor Rhys Ifans.

The film tells the story of an eccentric French shopkeeper called Terry Guetta, who decides to make a documentary about the shady world of street art and his attempts to find and befriend Banksy – only to have the artist turn the camera back on him when he eventually succeeds.

The film includes footage of many of the world’s most famous graffiti artists at work, and has interviews with Shepard Fairey and Invader as well as Banksy himself. It will be the first time that the elusive artist, who has long remained anonymous to avoid being prosecuted by the police, has been heard speaking.

Last week saw the opening for the G40 Summit, Art Whino’s huge 5-floor art exhibit spanning an enormous array of diverse artists (500+!). Going to the show’s opening party, last Saturday, was pretty much sensory overload. Just entering there the reception floor there was music blasting, multiple wall murals, live art/paintings, screen printing on it and lots of people mingling with each other and the artists. The art ranged from paintings, mixed media, drawings, photography and installation pieces– literally everything you can think of. Though keep your eyes open there are so many rooms throughout the floors, it might be easy to miss something you should’ve seen! Here are some photos from Saturday night (click the thumbnails a closer look)
