Lizzo’s got beauty on the brain. The Minny indie-hip hopper dropped her Coconut Oil EP last fall and just followed it up last week with a new single and video called “Water Me”. The track takes a decidedly different tack from the FKA Twigs’ tune of the same title. And it’s less about the benefits of staying hydrated and more a plea for a lover’s time and affection—the “water” of a growing relationship. And if her lover’s not feeling it, Lizzo’s got no problem moving on: “Love you so/but if you don’t/I have to leave, oh no!”
She also slips some positive empowerment in with the aqua-talk: “I don’t get dehydrated, I moisturize it daily/I am my inspiration.” With “Water Me”, Lizzo once again magically melds rap and gospel vibes into a hyped and holy affirmation of self.
