On July 10th, we were invited to check out the work of Lawrence Atoigue, aka Naturel, at New York’s Poppington Gallery. Based in the DMV and trained at Pratt, Naturel is an illustrator and artist who’s popularity has been rising steadily in the past year, thanks in some part to his strong social media presence, but mostly due to his amazing ability to break down images of contemporary urban scenes formed by colorful facets. His work is a crystalized universe that is part Pop Art, part Cubism, part Surrealism, part Hip Hop.
His work, whose style is referred to as vector art, is inspired by the lyrics of Kanye, Tupac, and Notorious B.I.G., depicted as still lives, landscapes, nudes, portraits and more, in classical compositions with a decidedly modern twist. Bright and colorful shards of color join to make these images of nudes wearing little else than Red October Yeezys, Basquiat reproductions, and faceted Jesus piece sculptures were among the pieces in this collection, curated by David Chang & Greg Cummins. So what? You want one? Many of his prints are affordable at around $180.
With over 62,000 followers on Instagram, and celebrity clients such as Rihanna, LeBron James, Swizz Beatz, Naturel is considered an influencer on the rise, and is well on his way to art stardom status. Naturel is at minimum a decorated veteran in the creative game. He’s been Creative Director for Alife, Levi’s, Bacardi, and Fiat, and designer and illustrator for Rockawear in the OG days.
Guests for the opening included Spike Lee, Damon Dash, Dee of Dee and Ricky, Smoke DZA, who rolled up in a tricked out red Caprice, Stretch Armstrong, and many industry insiders. There was beer, good looking people, great art, and good vibes. We look forward to Naturel’s continued success and how his work will continue to evolve and grow, like crystals on rock walls.
