FOOD: Sweetgreen Tribeca [NYC]
by Jenna Wilson
Tribeca has seen a recent influx of health-conscious restaurants in the past few months, most recently with the opening of the second NYC outpost of Sweetgreen on Greenwich Street. The company has been working their way around the east coast, bringing their locally-sourced and clean food philosophy across Virginia, DC, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and finally to New York.
Their philosophy is evident throughout their stores, which include a chalkboard hanging above the counter showcasing what local farm their products came from from. Every region sources their cheese and produce from farmers close to the stores, to support the communities that they bring their stores to.
The fresh produce and food made in store is what makes Sweetgreen’s food stand out. The food is healthy and delicious, which is what they set out to bring to customers. They want to make the connection between the farmer and the consumer as close as possible, and this is evident through the freshness of the ingredients. The layout of the restaurant showcases their preparation techniques with glass dividers allowing customers to see that how the food is made fresh and prepared in-house.
Their seasonal menu incorporates organic produce and proteins for their own signature menu options, or the ability to create your own. Every month brings an exclusive featured item that changes at the first of each month. Overall, their menu offers salads, rice bowls, soups, alongside drinks that include strawberry limeade, lemonades and juices. The Wild Rice bowl, once of their most popular items, features kale, roasted chicken, apples, dried cranberries, almonds and creamy goat cheese atop wild rice. Their Kale Caesar salad offers roasted chicken, tomatoes, kale, romaine, finished off with shaved parmesan and parmesan crisp pieces. The crisps give an added crunch to the creamy caesar that seems too delicious to be healthy. Their freshly made drinks include lemonades, iced tea, and strawberry limeades which is perfect to cool off with on a warm summer day.
With summer coming, Sweetgreen is the perfect place to go post-workout or when you want a freshly made salad where you can trust the source. Whether you go to the Tribeca store, or hit another of their locations, you’ll always know that you’re supporting the local community of farmers, no matter what state you’re in.
