You may have noticed for awhile that cider has been popping up on beer lists everywhere. While it may be the same color and consistency, do not ever mistake this for an authentic brew. There are some great ciders that are usually imported from England but, most of the stuff being pushed in restaurants is super sweet, fermented apple juice. The other day I stumbled upon the Sour Apple Saison from Epic Brewing out of Salt Lake City. Although it’s brewed with apples, this is no cider.
Farmhouse ales are my favorite beers because they are perfect to sip on all day. The nose of this saison is of a slightly sour apple infused with anise, nutmeg, clove, and cardamom. The high amount of carbonation eliminates the head within a matter of seconds and dominates the mouthfeel. Upon further exploration, this dry ale tasted exactly how it smelled. As the flavors build, there is a slightly grassy bridge that leads to a tart yet peppery finish. I wish it was a tad bit more sour but it’s definitely a high quality beer that would be perfect during the spring. Check it out for yourself. And remember that real friends don’t let friends drink cider.
