You can always romance someone with wine and chocolate, but why not combine the two? Mix your after-dinner cocktail with a sweet dessert and you’ll find yourself with an incredibly smooth and luscious drink that no one (including you) will be able to resist. I’m all for spiked hot chocolate, but using red wine for the spiking? What? I think maybe I’ve just graduated from stealing peppermint schnapps from my friends’ parents’ liquor stashes, but surprisingly, this hot chocolate just might be the best I’ve ever had, spiked or not. Super creamy, extremely comforting, and with that little hint of fruitiness that makes this drink perfectly unique – trust me, this is going to be your new staple for a cozy night in.
Red Wine Hot Chocolate
1/3 cup red wine (Merlot works well, but whatever is your favorite should work!)
6 ounces dark or bittersweet chocolate, chopped
1 cup milk (preferably whole)
1/3 cup water
pinch of salt
In a saucepan, whisk the chocolate and wine until melted.
Add water, milk, and salt and bring to a boil.
Continue to whisk for approximately 3-4 minutes – make sure the chocolate doesn’t start to burn!
Pour into mugs or glasses, and top with whipped cream if desired.
*Optional: To dress up your drinks with a little extra something, top with grated cinnamon of hot chocolate, crushed peppermints, and/or a spring of mint.
