Lately, survival films have been a dime a dozen. However, it’s safe to say that J.C. Candor’s All is Lost starring Robert Redford may stand alone as a cinematographic masterpiece. In All is Lost, Redford is the only cast member, and there is almost no dialogue. But the plot of the movie admittedly doesn’t require much dialogue. Redford, on a sailing trip around the world, suddenly finds himself drifting in the high seas after his ship collides with a floating shipping container.
Redford faces mortality as the unrelenting sun, the circling sharks, and the lack of food and water brings him closer to death. All while his radio has effectively conked out. Redford’s dire predicament will leave the audience on the edge of their seats as he is forced to depend on his resourcefulness to chart the waters and navigate the currents with the hopes of finding land or a traveling ship.
