If the new Truths EP is anything to go by, we can expect to see even more exciting stuff to come from London duo Maribou State. Going from strength to strength, having previously released Tongue in June and last year’s Olivia EP, both to much acclaim, Maribou State don’t seem to feel the need to speed things up in order to move listeners. Conversely, in Truths, they’ve slowed down the bpm, and in doing so are winning more hearts in the process.
Still very danceable, the Truths EP tracks are deep, soulful and markedly spacious. Take for example the EP’s title track featuring Jimi Nxlr, who breathes impeccable vocals delicately in and out of an already pulsating palate of synths and beats, bringing credibility to its emotional delivery. Words and notes are stretched out to linger just a bit longer, giving their presence and meaning even greater impact.
While giving elements time and space, the productions still sound big – to be comfortably played on large sounds systems to thousand-strong festival crowds, who will undoubtedly roar with adulation.
Whether remixing the likes of Fatboy Slim, Submotion Orchestra or Ultraista, or dishing out their own original productions, Maribou State make rapturously riveting music.
