Pretty Lights (Derek Vincent Smith) has a new album coming up next week and it appears as though it will be quite a project.
You may already know Pretty Lights from his awesome hit “Finally Moving” from his 2006 album “Taking Up Your Precious Time.” The new album is called “A Color Map of the Sun” and it was produced in a very cool way. Smith mentions the different process of recording live instrumentation to be used for the samples on this project rather than the normal sampling process. Pretty ingenious if you ask me as it must have been quite a painstaking process to put so many sample sounds together! Pretty Lights has uploaded a video that highlights this process as a preview to the album and you can check that out below.
The first single from the new album is a great jam called “Around the Block” featuring Brooklyn’s Talib Kweli. Talib’s rapping is definitely a highlight of the single but you also get the great production value that Pretty Lights puts into it. I really liked the keyboard work a lot too.
One of my favorite things about Pretty Lights is that he still offers his music as a free download for signing up for his mailing list and you can download “Around the Block” for free right now at PrettyLightsMusic.com. However, you can also support this fine artist’s work by purchasing signed vinyls and CD’s from his website as well, so please do and then we can hear more Pretty Lights in the future!
“A Color Map of the Sun” will be released on July 2nd on his own Pretty Lights Music (PLM) label.
