FOOD & DRINK: Charlotte’s VBGB Beer Hall & Garden
by Powell Bernhardt
As the Queen City rebounds from the mass exodus following the CIAA Championship, Charlotteans already know the best place to grab a good beer is not at those infamous day parties.
Located just outside of Uptown Charlotte in the Third Ward, VBGB Beer Hall & Garden has over 30 beers on tap. While they showcase some local breweries like NoDa, Catawba Valley, Birdsong, and Four Friends, they also have many other craft brews, imports, liquor, wine as well as some good eats. The menu consists of jazzed up bar food like fried pickles and jalapeños, Zweigles brats and hot dogs, beer battered onion rings, vegetarian options, and wings with a variety of Dinosaur sauces. Although those items are decent, the buttery jumbo gourmet pretzel with a side of beer cheese sauce is the star of the show. With a crusty exterior exterior and a soft doughy interior, it is divine.
Whether you stay inside and chat it up with friends while your beer stays cold on the “frost rail” (i.e., a block of ice embedded in the bar) or head outside and play games while you throw a few back, VBGB is the perfect place to unwind after a long week in Charlotte.
