A rare breakthrough in the often saturated world of ill-conceived mashups, Amerigo Gazaway’s 2011 Fela Kuti/De La Soul offering *Fela Soul* became “a virtual web hit”(MTV) seemingly overnight. As one of the year’s most buzz-worthy independent releases, the album went on to claim *Top 5* rankings on both NPR and Soul Train’s highly sought “Best of 2011” lists.
On his latest effort, Gazaway re-orchestrates classic ATCQ productions by utilizing the original Jazz, Soul and Funk recordings sampled throughout the group’s extensive catalogue. Pairing his reinterpreted instrumentals with vocals from West Coast innovators,The Pharcyde, the producer effectively delivers a new and distinct way to experience the sounds which defined Hip-Hop’s “golden era”. Equally compelling are the found interview sound bites Gazaway cleverly uses via outros and interludes to share slices of the groups’ respective history; weaving a narrative told in his subject’s own words. With nuanced arrangements clearly crafted by a seasoned producer, Bizarre Tribe serves as a fitting tribute to the artists which inspired its creation.
