ARTIST SPOTLIGHT- So Super Sam
It’s always interesting to find out more about female artists in the electronic genre since they are still somewhat of a rarity these days. I’ve written about England’s Maya Jane Coles here at The Couch Sessions and now thanks to DJ Run P. I’ve been made aware of another talented female who goes by “So Super Sam.” Raised in L.A. but now in Brooklyn, Samantha Duenas is a DJ/tastemaker that is about to take the electronic music world by storm.
I think she could take the electronic music world by surprise because of her seemingly encyclopedic use of genres and vintage sounds. For instance, on her most recent Soundcloud mix “We Found Ourselves Lost”, I heard a lot of variations of R&B and soul and even Robin Thicke’s performance of “The Sweetest Love” stood out to me. I also liked the addition of the trip hoppy Portishead track “It Could Be Sweet.” She included a lot of chilled out beats on this mix and excels in melding the sexiest of the sexy tracks. James Blake will get anyone going and when you follow that up with Beach House and Bon Iver to close up shop, the listener will melt in ecstasy by the end. And really…if you can gracefully mix Cee Lo with Robin Thicke you are doing pretty well.
Her previous mixtape “This Way Up” was released last October before she hit the road as the tour DJ for Childish Gambino. There are some great bright sounds on that mix that hurdle through one genre after the other often making for a very invigorating listen! She even includes some Best Coast towards the end for some peppy surf pop.
So Super Sam has some upcoming events in lower Manhattan (see below) so you can check her out live there and stay updated via her facebook and twitter account as well. Unfortunately, she has only released a few mixtapes at this point but she has a keen ear for putting a them together, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
